A proper club fitting generally starts with bringing your current set of sticks to the hitting bay. This obvious step allows the fitter to spec and blueprint the clubs, establish a baseline and figure out what, if anything, needs a closer look.
Those who’ve been through a fitting are likely nodding their head in agreement. Without your clubs, you’re forcing the fitter to fly blind and figure things out from an unenviable position.
But what about the golf ball? Most golfers don’t consider bringing the ball they’re currently playing to a fitting — and that’s a problem. As we saw during our recent golf ball testing with Golf Laboratories’ swing robot, launch and spin characteristics can change depending on the ball you’re using.
As GOLF’s Fully Equipped crew discussed on the latest episode, bringing along a few sleeves of your current ball — or using what’s already in the golf bag — is a great way to arm your fitter with even more knowledge as he assesses your equipment.
If you’re playing one of the big-name brands and forget to bring sleeves with you, it’s possible a fitter might have some you can use during the fitting session. Just don’t assume.
