When TaylorMade’s first-generation P790s hit retail in 2017, they helped introduce an entirely new category of “Player’s Distance” irons to the market. While the 2017 P790 models looked like simple blade-style irons with clean cavities, they actually featured a hollow-body construction filled with a unique SpeedFoam material between the face and body to help boost ball speed and feel.
In 2019, TaylorMade updated the P790 design with an even thinner face, 20 percent larger sweet spot and a Progressive Inverted Cone Technology (PICT) for better accuracy. To date, the P790s are one of the best-selling iron franchises in the company’s history, according to TaylorMade.
Now on its third generation of P790 irons, TaylorMade incorporated significant updates to one of the core technologies and smartened up the sweet spot.
Rather than using the original SpeedFoam material between the 4140 steel face and 8620 carbon steel body of the irons, TaylorMade developed a new “SpeedFoam Air” urethane material that’s 69 percent less dense and saves an average of 3.5 grams per head.
Thanks to the weight savings from the SpeedFoam Air material, TaylorMade was able to lower the center of gravity to improve launch, and the heads now use the thinnest faces in P790 franchise history. Also, after charting shots hit by “thousands and thousands” of golfers, TaylorMade realigned the sweet spot to perform better on common mishits by regular golfers, particularly in the high toe and low heel.
At retail, TaylorMade’s 2021 P790 irons sell for $185 per club with steel shafts (7-piece set; $1,300) and $214 per club with graphite shafts (7-piece set; $1,500).
