Jordan Spieth has been nothing if not candid throughout his career. Whether it be talking to his caddie, talking to his ball, or talking to the media, Spieth will never leave you looking for a quote.
That trend continued recently in a video posted on Twitter by the PGA Tour. Spieth was asked if there was one thing about golf he wished he knew in the past that he knew now. Instead of blurting out some canned, corporate response, Spieth reflected. After a few moments, he peeled back the curtain and gave an honest, human answer.
“Honestly, I wish I’d played with the mentality I had back then,” he began, speaking of his junior-golf days. “You overthink the game the more you’re out. You just want to play like a kid and just freewheel it and have fun. So, I’d tell myself to just keep my head down; focus on why you love the game.
“Try and hit the cart picker on the range. Try and hit that flop-slice 5-iron. Try and punch it and hit the flagstick. Just don’t take it too seriously. Because I didn’t back then and the only times the game has been difficult to me is when I take it too seriously.
“Just try and keep your head down, have fun. Play as much golf as you can. Play with friends. Just enjoy that competition the way I grew up loving it.”
Wise words from the 26-year-old. Perhaps he took that advice to heart in the PGA Tour’s return? Spieth notched a T-10 at Colonial last week and was in contention for much of the tournament, playing (and looking) more in form than he has in recent memory. He’ll look to build on that momentum this week at the RBC Heritage Classic in Hilton Head, S.C.
