What’s happening at impact when an elite iron player strikes the ball?

Research tells us three things:

1. The club is descending into impact.
2. The arc on which the club is moving bottoms out in front of the ball’s position.
3. The clubface is de-lofted, a result of the first two moves. Recreational golfers tend to do the opposite: They add loft at impact and rarely bottom out in the correct place. The result? A huge loss of distance.

Teaching professional Bill Schmedes III is here to help — more specifically, his unique training aid the Impact Press ($99; impactpressgolf.com) is. Colored strips on the hosel and topline guide you into a powerful impact by teaching you how to lead the clubhead with your hands. When the red strip points at your midsection and the green strip rests parallel to your target line, you’re money!

Schmedes provides a litany of drills to help you get the most from your Impact Press. Better ball striking is just around the corner.
