Don’t worry football fans, Tony Romo will have plenty of time to prepare himself for his slate of football game broadcasts on CBS this fall.

The CBS football color analyst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback gave it a try at getting his Korn Ferry Tour card, but came up short in the pre-qualifying stage this week.

Romo shot rounds of 75-72-75 at the Lantana pre-qualifying site in Argyle, Texas to finish tied for 65th in the 73-man field. His 6-over-par total was eight shots back of the 2-under number he needed to qualify for the first stage of Korn Ferry Tour Q-School. The top-35 scores plus ties moved on.

The 42-year-old played as an amateur, and actually had it within three shots of the cut line at one point during his final round of the 54-hole event, thanks to two birdies in his opening four holes. He stumbled to begin his back nine, however, dropping three strokes in five holes to fall down the leaderboard.

Walker Lee took the medalist position in the qualifier at 16-under for the three days.

You have to wonder if winning the American Century Championship in July for the third time may have inspired him to try and take his game to next level.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Romo try play with the big boys. He’s been in multiple U.S. Open local qualifiers, and even made it to the sectional qualifier in 2010.

That year he shot 71 in the first round of the qualifier, but weather delays would have forced to him to return the next day for the second round. He instead returned to his day job for organized team activities with the Cowboys.

Romo has also made four PGA Tour starts (other than the Pebble Beach pro-am) over the past few years, and even made a Korn Ferry Start last season at the Vertex Bank Championship. That week in Arlington, Texas, Romo finished last in the field, failing to make the cut with rounds of 77-76.
