Dustin Johnson’s resume was already impressive, but now it’s among the best of his generation. With his win at the Masters, Johnson now has two majors, 24 PGA Tour wins and, finally, a green jacket.
Despite a rocky start, Johnson settled the ship coming down the stretch at Augusta National to hold off Cameron Smith and set the all-time scoring record for the tournament. He has now won four times during the calendar year and strengthens his stranglehold on the No. 1 spot in the World Golf Ranking.
Here are four things you (probably) didn’t know about the newest Masters champion.
1. Sunday was the first time he’s converted a 54-hole lead at a major
Despite holding a 54-hole lead in majors four times before, Johnson had never converted them into wins before Sunday. That monkey is finally off his back after a spectacular final-round 68 to lock up the green jacket. With six birdies against just four bogeys, Johnson never allowed anyone to make much of a charge and made his final round more of a victory lap than a stressful grind.
2. He’s one of three players to win in his first 14 seasons on Tour
Now with a win under his belt in the 2020-21 season, Johnson has wins in his first 14 seasons on Tour. Starting with his first win during his rookie year in 2008, there has yet to be a season that doesn’t feature Johnson holding a trophy at least once. This streak puts him in elite company as Jack Nicklaus (17) and Tiger Woods (14) are the only two golfers to have matched this feat. Not bad company.
3. He’s the first player to reach 20 under in the Masters
With a birdie on the par-5 15th, Johnson became the first golfer to reach 20 under at the Masters. In a tournament that has hosted the greatest golfers of all time, that is an extremely impressive feat. Johnson has been known to get extremely hot in the past (see: 2020 Northern Trust) but doing it in a major takes the accomplishment to an entirely different level. In the process, he also set the all-time Masters scoring record.
4. He holds the record for consecutive rounds under par at Augusta
As if the all-time scoring record wasn’t enough, Johnson also set the record for most consecutive rounds under par at Augusta National with 11. Since a first-round 73 at the 2018 Masters, Johnson’s worst score at Augusta is a 71. There may be no one who’s played better at the Masters over the past three years, and a green jacket is well deserved.
