This week the PGA Tour hosts its annual team event in Louisiana, the 2021 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Here’s everything you need to know to watch the tournament.

Zurich Classic preview

The Zurich Classic is the one event each year when we get to see PGA Tour pros compete under a entirely different format from every other official tournament. It wasn’t always that way, but beginning in 2017, the Zurich transformed from a typical individual stroke-play event to a team format.

The new format is a mix of match play and stroke play. Eighty two-player teams will play four-ball for the first and third rounds, and foursome for the second and final rounds, while maintaining a team stroke-play score. Thirty-three teams and ties will make the cut and play the weekend.

In foursomes (also known as alternate shot), teammates will alternate tee shots hole to hole, and take turns hitting shots from the tee to the green to achieve a single score for each hole. In four-ball, both players will play all shots and the best score for each hole will count toward the team’s total score to par.

Last year’s Zurich Classic was canceled due to Covid-19 concerns, so the reigning champions are still Jon Rahm and Ryan Palmer, who teamed up to win the 2019 event. Rahm and Palmer are back to defend their title along with a host of other Tour stars.
