Former Masters champ Mike Weir made a back-nine eagle and closed his round with three straight pars to win the Insperity Invitational on Sunday in The Woodlands, Texas, claiming his first-ever PGA Tour Champions event.

Weir played Nos. 11-15 in two under without making a par, then finished with three straight pars.

John Daly, meanwhile, was five under on his round when he got to the par-4 18th hole. Tied with Weir at the time and playing in the group ahead of him, Daly found the fairway and then came up short on his approach, splashing his ball into the water. He made double bogey. Weir’s approach into 18 found the green and he two-putted for his two-stroke win.

“I caught a gust on 18,” Daly said. “I hit a 9-iron from about 155 and I hit a 9-iron from 141 there and I caught a gust and just got a bad break. But I can’t hit the ball any better.”

Weir signed for a final-round four-under 68 and finished 10 under overall. Daly, who shot 69, tied for second with Tim Petrovic and David Toms.

“J.D. played great; it was unfortunate for him on the last,” Weir said. “This means a lot. I played really well today. I’m still a little off with my putting. I made it hard on myself. But I hit the shots that I needed. It feels very good.”
