Phil Mickelson’s remarkable run on the PGA Tour Champions continues. The 51-year-old six-time major champ put together a brilliant back nine on Sunday at Phoenix Country Club to win the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
Mickelson birdied three of the last four holes and signed for a 31 on the back. His six-under 65 pushed him to 19 under, which was good enough to edge Steven Alker, who finished birdie-birdie and came up a stroke short in the season finale.
The win improves Mickelson’s ridiculous PGA Tour Champions record to four wins in six starts. He won twice in the fall of 2020 and recently won the Constellation Furyk & Friends last month.
Mickelson entered Sunday three back of 54-hole leader Jim Furyk, but Furyk could only muster one front-nine birdie and made bogeys on 10 and 13. Furyk was even par on the day and tied for 5th, which allowed Bernhard Langer to win the season-long race for the Charles Schwab Cup.
Mickelson said earlier this week he plans to take some time off from the golf course for the rest of 2021, although we’ll see him as a member of the TV broadcast for the next edition of The Match between Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka on Nov. 26 in Las Vegas.
