Sunday at the PGA Championship turned into a three-man horse race, with Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland battling to upsurp Xander Schauffele’s lead.

As the leaders got their rounds started, the players who had become the tournament’s supporting characters began to file through as they finished their rounds. Rory McIlroy signed for a 67 to finish T12. Scottie Scheffler capped his surreal week with a 66 to finish T8.

“Probably the strangest week of his golfing career, definitely,” GOLF’s Dylan Dethier said of Scheffler. “He came in as the overwhelming favorite. Left facing felony charges, still.”

As the afternoon deepened into early evening, the focus shifted to the contenders.

Both Dethier and GOLF’s Sean Zak were bullish on Schauffele’s ability to close out his first major championship, and Schauffele came up big indeed, posting clutch birdies on 11 and 12 to keep his chasers at bay, and capping the day with a 6-footer on 18 for the win.

“He played like a player who deserves a major this entire week,” Zak said.

“There was a lot of chaos this week,” Dethier added. “I think in the end, we got the right guy. That’s all you can ask for.”
