They might play for millions of dollars and fly private wherever they please, but on occasion we are treated to a nice reminder that, yes, PGA Tour players are people, too. Look no further than the two playoff contestants in last weekend’s Charles Schwab Challenge, Sam Burns and Scottie Scheffler. 

Burns and Scheffer are a perfect pair in this reminder in part because they’re really good friends. Such good friends that they shared a house together during Masters week, an eventful one for the Schefflers. (It was less eventful for Burns, who missed the cut.) They spent each night that week playing games of Sequence together, with Burns’ trainer winding up on the losing end most often.

So when Scheffler got up-and-down for a par on the 72nd hole of the event Sunday, he knew he’d be facing off against a good pal in Burns, who had lit up Colonial with a final-round 65. They embraced after the round, and even walked down the fairway together off the first playoff hole.

When Burns made his miraculous 38-footer from just off the green for birdie, Scheffler had no choice but to dap up his buddy and say what we all thought: Good putt, man.

When Scheffler missed his putt to tie, Burns’ wife Caroline came running onto the green. Tour faithful had to be wondering, wait, where is Scheffler’s wife? Meredith Scheffler has been ever-present this year during Scottie’s successes, but she was nowhere to be found at Colonial Sunday. It’s because she wasn’t at Colonial on Sunday. She was elsewhere in the DFW area, helping her sister get married. 

Shortly after the playoff ended, Scheffler answered two quick questions with the media and raced over to the wedding venue. He posted a wedding photo to his Instagram story Sunday night, “Made it!”

Back at Colonial, Burns was going through all the trappings of being a tournament winner. He posed for photos with the trophy, posed for photos with the tartan jacket, even posed for photos in the secondary trophy: a ’79 Trans-Am Firebird. 

Naturally, he spent a bit more time with the media, breaking down his relationship with Scheffler: 

“We’re probably best friends. But at the same time I can assure you, he wanted to beat me more than anybody else and I wanted to beat him more than anybody else, and it just happened to be the two of us at the end.

“Yeah, it’s going to be a fun story that we’ll get to have for the rest of our careers, and fortunately I got the better end of it this time, but hopefully we’re at the beginning of these situations in the future.”

By the time his winner’s duties came to a close, Burns was headed home. His celebration differed greatly from Scheffler’s wedding attendance. Burns grabbed dinner from the most humble of locations: a Buc-ee’s convenience store. 

Not exactly fine dining, Buc-ee’s is all about having the basics of what you need while on the road. What Burns needed, now that his week was done and he was on the road, was a meal. It’s not clear what he ended up with, but it seems he paired it with a medium-sized coffee. 

For Scheffler, probably some steak and potatoes — your typical wedding fare — and for Burns, a foil-wrapped sandwich from a convenience store. We have no choice but to agree with what Burns said above: hopefully we are at the beginning of these situations in the future.

“Well, we got some highlights from the D flight of the club championship.” 

At 4:32 p.m., Fort Worth, Texas, time on Sunday, Jim Nantz fired that shot over CBS’ airwaves. He wasn’t wrong. Penalty shots, penalty drops, bogeys, doubles and triples had the Charles Schwab Challenge looking like something more familiar to many of the weekend players watching from home, instead of the PGA Tour event it was claiming to be.  

But wait. Hadn’t Davis Riley, at a little after 3 p.m. Fort Worth, Texas, time, also tapped in for birdie on the 11th at Colonial, moved to a respectable five-under for the day and took a one-shot lead? And didn’t four other players — Scottie Scheffler, Harold Varner III, Scott Stallings and Brendon Todd — shortly join him at the top?

That also happened. 

So … what happened? Well, for one, none of those five won. And the man who did, Sam Burns, started the day a stunning seven shots back. Add it all up, toss in heavy winds, baked-out greens and a testing track, and it stands as one of the more chaotic 90 minutes you’ll see among the pros.

Let’s try to unpack it all. We’ll do so by looking at the five who were tied for the lead at one point at the D flight of the club … err, the Charles Schwab Challenge. 

Davis Riley 

3:05 p.m.: Riley taps in for birdie on the par-5 11th. He leads by one over Varner, Scheffler and Todd.

3:25 p.m.: Riley dumps his tee shot on the par-3 13th into the left greenside bunker, blasts out to 3 feet — then misses that. Riley, Varner, Scheffer and Todd are tied for the lead. A few minutes later, Stallings joins them after a birdie on 11. 

3:36 p.m.: Riley tees off on the next hole, drops his driver behind him on his follow-through — and watches his ball sail over a barbed-wire fence right of the hole. He hits a provisional — left and in the trees. Riley finishes with a double-bogey 6, and he tumbles out of the lead, which four now share. 

Said analyst Trevor Immelman on the CBS broadcast: “Gosh, how the last five minutes or so have changed the complexion of this tournament for Davis Riley. Mind’s spinning.”

Later, Riley bogeys 17, too. 

Said Riley afterward: “Unfortunately, I just had one bad swing today and kind of got it started right and then you mis-hit one and it just gets escalated at that point. Yeah, it was unfortunate, but yes, it’s extremely difficult.”

Brendon Todd

3:52 p.m.: Todd hits his third shot on the par-5 11th — and he nearly lets go of his club on his follow-through. From 110 yards out, from almost the middle of the fairway, Todd drops his ball into a right greenside bunker, misses a 9-footer for par, and he falls out of the lead, which three now share. 

Said Immelman on the broadcast: “Pretty poor shot there from the middle of the fairway.”

Todd bogeys the next hole, too. 

Scott Stallings and Harold Varner 

We need to combine Stallings and Varner, who played together, because there may be some cause and effect here. 

4 p.m. Stallings is trying to figure out where he can drop after hitting his ball 40 yards over the 12th green. 

4:08 p.m.: Stallings drops — and, from 40 yards away, hits it 10 yards short. 

4:11 p.m.: Varner, after waiting for Stallings, misses a 19-footer for par after hitting out of a greenside bunker — and misses from 3 feet for bogey and 3 feet for double bogey before making from 2 feet. That’s four putts. He falls out of the lead, which two now share.

“All that waiting,” analyst Ian Baker-Finch said on the CBS broadcast.

Later, Varner doubles 13, triples 14, birdies 15, pars 16, doubles 17 and bogeys 18 — for a back-nine 45. 

4:13 p.m.: Stallings taps in for a bogey, and he falls out of the lead, which now only Scheffler holds. 

Stallings bogeys 14 and 17, too. 

Said Stallings afterward: “Man, I would like to see a video of my putt on 14. We read it kind of outside right, and just like the ball comes off the putter and just goes straight left. Everybody had to deal with it. The course was definitely very fair. But man, just kind of like I said yesterday, you kind of got some of those holes kind of up on top, some of the flat spots, and you could hear the tent — we were putting in that.”

Tournaments

4:21: Scheffler has a 3-footer for par on 12 — and his ball doesn’t touch the cup, missing to the right. 

At this point, Burns, who had finished an hour ago, moves into a share of the lead. Which he wouldn’t give up. From the clubhouse.  

“Who would have ever thought that you’d have a chance seven back?” Burns told reporters as he waited. 

Conclusion 

Golf is hard.

Everyone was winning. Then no one wanted it. 

And the guy who was sitting back and watching it all — for some two hours! — ended up on top. 

Wild? You bet. In the end on Sunday at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Sam Burns dropped a 38-footer for birdie on the first playoff hole, Scottie Scheffler couldn’t match from 36 feet on the 18th at Colonial Country Club, and Burns is your winner for the fourth time on the PGA Tour, and third time this season.  

Only, after starting the day a whopping seven shots out of the lead, no one, not even Burns, saw this coming.

“When you start the day seven back, I knew Scottie was at 11, I mean, the way that guy is playing right now, who would have ever thought that you’d have a chance seven back?” Burns said. 

Good question. Scheffler, outside of a missed cut last week at the PGA Championship, has looked unbeatable since the Super Bowl, winning four times, including at the Masters. A host of others were also in contention on Sunday. But Burns climbed and climbed. And others either were stuck in neutral or stumbled. 

Burns birdied 1, 2 and 4. He bogeyed 6. He birdied 6, 7 and 9 for a front-nine 30. Burns then played the back at even, signed for a five-under 65, which tied for the low round of the day, then pulled up a chair and watched. 

The craziest sequence began after Scott Stallings birdied the 11th. At that point, five players — Scheffler, Stallings, Davis Riley, Harold Varner and Brendon Todd — all shared the lead, at 10-under, with Burns at nine. Not even an hour later, all five leaders dropped at least one shot.  

Riley double-bogeyed the 14th and bogeyed the 17th. Todd bogeyed 11 and 12. Varner? Oh boy. He tripled 12, doubled 13, tripled 14, birdied (?) 15, parred 16, doubled 17 and bogeyed 18 for a back-nine 45 (!). Stallings bogeyed 12, 14 and 17. And Scheffler bogeyed 12. 

Whew. After all that, Scheffler parred his way home, and he and Burns moved on to the playoff, at nine-under. 

And three shots later, the guy who was sitting back and watching it all — for some two hours! — is your winner. 

Wild? You bet. 

The takeaway 

Sam Burns holds the trophy. But Colonial was the winner.

— Scottie Scheffler begins the final round with a two-shot lead. He’s at 11-under, Brendon Todd and Scott Stallings are at nine-under, and Harold Varner III is at eight-under. 

— Todd birdies the 383-yard, par-4 2nd, and he moves into a share of the lead with Scheffler. Scheffler and Todd are at 11-under, Stallings and Varner are at nine-under, and Sam Burns, Mito Pereira, Davis Riley and Cam Davis are at eight-under. 

— Todd bogeys the 222-yard, par-3 4th, and he falls out of the lead. Scheffler’s at 11-under, Todd and Varner are at 10-under, Burns and Stallings are at nine-under, and Davis is at eight-under. 

— Scheffler bogeys the 391-yard, par-4 6th, and he again drops into a share of the lead. Scheffler and Todd are at 10-under, Burns, Stallings and Varner are at nine-under, and Riley is at eight-under. 

— Varner birdies the 439-yard, par-4 7th on a 10-foot putt, and he moves into a three-way tie for the lead. Scheffler, Varner and Todd are at 10-under, Burns and Stallings are at nine-under, and Riley is at eight-under. 

— Riley birdies the 393-yard, par-4 10th, and he moves into a four-way tie for the lead. Scheffler, Varner, Todd and Riley are at 10-under, and Burns and Stallings are at nine-under. 

— Riley birdies the 631-yard, par-5 11th after chipping to 4 inches, and he takes a one-shot lead. He’s at 11-under, Varner, Scheffler and Todd are at 10-under, and Burns and Stallings are at nine-under. 

— Riley bogeys the 194-yard, par-3 13th after failing to get up and down from the left greenside bunker, and he falls out of the lead. Riley, Varner, Scheffler and Todd are at 10-under, and Burns and Stallings are at nine-under. 

— Stallings birdies the 11th after getting up and down from a greenside bunker, and he moves into a five-way tie for the lead. Stallings, Riley, Varner, Scheffler and Todd are at 10-under, and Burns is at nine-under. 

— Riley double-bogeys the 448-yard, par-4 14th, and he falls out of the lead. Stallings, Varner, Scheffler and Todd are at 10-under, and Burns is at nine-under.

— Scheffler pars the 438-yard, par-4 18th, and he and Burns head to a playoff. After 72 holes, the scoreboard reads this way: Scheffler and Burns finish at nine-under, Todd at eight-under and Stallings, Riley and Tony Finau at seven-under. 

— The first playoff hole is the 18th. Davis and Scheffler each hit the fairway with their tee shots. On Scheffler’s second shot, he hits right of the pin and is 36 feet away, and on Burns’, he hits over the flag and is about 38 feet away. Burns drops his for birdie, Scheffler misses and Burns is the winner.

Before we get serious, before we talk about whether Harold Varner III can finally break through on the PGA Tour, and before we discuss his thoughts in doing so, we would be remiss not to share some HVIII stand-up. One, it’ll lighten the mood. And two, it ties into the whole winning thing anyway. The setups are provided by the assembled press at the Charles Schwab Challenge. 

Take it away, Harold. 

What was the toughest part of the conditions for you today?

“Nothing. I don’t control them, so I don’t think much of it.”

[Laughter.]

You said you’ve played with Jordan [Spieth] here a couple times before. Is that kind of a nice relaxing pairing to be able to go out and play on Saturday like this?

“For sure. I think you can get in those pairings, and it can be just you and your caddie. It’s not a very fun place to be. I like to have fun, so it gets a little tough. I can only talk to my caddie so much. I love him and all, but yeah, what else are we going to talk about?”

[Laughter] 

How would you characterize that day today?

“It was good, yeah. I didn’t know it was bogey-free.”

OK, so it wasn’t exactly Saturday Night Live. But it wasn’t some of the cliche dribble we sometimes are served, either. Point is, Varner’s a showman. He doesn’t shy from the stage. That’s good. Because one is again set for him.  

On Saturday at Colonial, Varner, as he mentioned, was bogey free on his way to a two-under 68, and that followed a Friday 68 and a Thursday 66. Sunday, he’ll start three strokes back of leader Scottie Scheffler. But it’s here where we have to remind you that Varner has actually never won on Tour. Though Varner is well aware, thank you very much. 

Tournaments

It’s the why-not that’s been confusing. We’ve discussed the chutz-pah, so it’s not that. A look at the stats shows he’s solid from tee to green; if anything, he’s a little shaky on the greens (95th in Strokes Gained: Putting this year), but worse putters have won at least once. So it’s not that.

It’s just sometimes golf, you know. 

Which is actually pretty much what happened when he did win, at the Saudi Invitational, which, though not a Tour event, was filled with Tour stars. There, wouldn’t you know it, on the 72nd hole, needing a putt to drop from 90-plus feet away to win, a 90-plus foot putt dropped, and he won. 

“Crazy s**t can happen,” Varner said Saturday. “Man. You’re sitting there on — you just never know. You’re never out of it. Like going back, thinking about it while you’re asking me, you’re sitting there on 17, I’m in the bunker and I’m two shots down, I’m like, how can I tie. Just believe you can do — anything can go in from anywhere, obviously.”

So is that the final piece? We’ll find out Sunday. Keep in mind that it’s a surprise now when Scheffler doesn’t win, so there’s that. 

But funnier things have happened. 

“I think it’s for a person like myself and other people, I think if you want to learn and you want to win, I think you kind of just take a little bit here and there, nothing specific where I need to do this tomorrow,” Varner said. “I think you go play golf and execute the best you can and have fun with it. It’s a game. 

“I really love competing. Like that’s what makes it so fun. Everyone is like, what do you love the most about golf. I’m like, I love trying to beat other people. Everyone is like, beat the course. If I only played the course, I wouldn’t play golf.”

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is in the lead heading in to the final round of a PGA Tour event.

Already a winner four times over this season, Scheffler fought through tough conditions to shoot a two-under 68 on Saturday at the Charles Schwab Challenge to take a two-shot lead over a pair of players tied for second.

Just 18 holes separate Scheffler from his fifth Tour win of the year, which would further separate him from the pack at the top of the Official World Golf Ranking. Scheffler tees off for Sunday’s finale at Colonial in the final pairing alongside Brendon Todd starting at 2:15 p.m. ET.

Previewing Charles Schwab Challenge Round 3

Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler were both popular picks to win the second major of the year at last week’s PGA Championship, but neither ended up having a week worth remembering.

But it seems like a trip back to their home state of Texas, and sleeping in their own beds at night, has got both of their games back on track.

Spieth opened with a steady 69 on Thursday at Colonial, then followed it up with a 66 to reach five under. He’ll begin the third round four shots behind a trio of players tied for the lead at nine under, a trio that includes Scheffler, who went 66-65 on Thursday and Friday.

At last week’s PGA Championship, World No. 1 and tournament favorite Scottie Scheffler had a disappointing and rare missed cut. But he’s aiming to get back to his winning ways this week at Colonial, and through two rounds, so far so good.

Scheffler fired an impressive five-under 65 in Friday’s second round, which followed up an opening-round 66 for the Masters champion. That leaves him at nine under and in a three-way tie for the lead with Beau Hossler and Scott Stallings.

For Saturday’s third round, Scheffler will play in the second-to-last pairing alongside Patrick Reed (eight under). They’ll get started at 2:50 p.m. ET. You can stream Saturday’s third round via PGA Tour Live on ESPN+.

So far this year, it seems like Scottie Scheffler has won almost every event. In reality, that impressive number stands at four, and it includes his first major triumph at the Masters.

Last week’s PGA Championship, however, did not go according to plan for the World No. 1. Scheffler was the betting favorite to win and has a long history at the Tulsa, Okla., course, but he shot 71-75 to miss the cut.

Now he’s back in his home state of Texas and hungry to get back to his winning ways.
