CHASKA, Minn. — For nearly every significant moment of Brooke Henderson’s professional career, her sister Brittany has been there. In her first victory as a pro, Brooke beat Brittany by one. When Brittany received a sponsor’s exemption into the Cambia Portland Classic, Brooke Monday qualified and then won it (by eight). And a year later when Brooke won her first major title, Brittany was carrying her bag as caddie. (We’ll get back to the importance of that moment soon.)

Now, after her third-place finish at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, Henderson’s best major finish in a decade? Yeah, her sister definitely played a part in that, too. Even though she never set foot on property.

Let us explain.

The Henderson girls grew up outside of Ottawa and quickly became golf stars. They both played on Golf Canada’s junior national team, and Brittany, who is six years older, played at Coastal Carolina. After a decorated amateur career, Brooke turned pro and lived up to all the lofty expectations, and with Brittany by her side. Her older sister has been on the bag as caddie for 13 of Brooke’s 14 wins (including both major titles).

But Brittany last caddied at the Tournament of Champions in January before stepping away. She and her husband, Zach Sepanik, were expecting a daughter this summer.

Veteran caddie John Killeen took over as looper, although Brooke eventually brought in her cousin, Ryan Henderson, at the Mizuho Americas Open. He’s been on the bag since, although it’s been somewhat of a slow season for Brooke. She took third at the Tournament of Champions with Brittany, but hadn’t finished in the top 20 in the 10 tournaments since. She’s lost strokes to her peers on approach and around the greens. Slow starts have also hampered her — she ranks 103rd in first-round scoring average.

But something changed this week, and right on time. She arrived in Minnesota and slept with her phone close by, just in case. Ten minutes before she woke up on Thursday, she got the message she had been waiting for: she was an aunt.

Excited, motivated and, well, just happy, Henderson kicked that poor first-round scoring average to the curb and shot a three-under 69. She then sat with the media, still beaming, and explained the origin of her niece’s name: Sahalee June.

Sahalee means high heavenly grounds, although Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash., is also where Brooke won her first major title (in June), back when she beat Lydia Ko in a playoff at the 2016 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship as an 18-year-old pro. Brittany was on the bag.

“Even early on Thursday I was on a high because she was born Thursday morning,” Brooke said Sunday. “A couple times I was in a rough spot and I was like, it’s OK; life is good. And it just kind of helped me, and then I was able to birdie and get it under par after that. So I feel like mentally having kind of great weeks like this is really exciting.”

Henderson continued to play well at Hazeltine. Sixty-eight Friday. Sixty-nine Saturday. Haeran Ryu grabbed the 54-hole lead at 11 under, but Henderson was one back. Ina Yoon, at nine under, also made up the final threesome.

The fourth round had an early start, but after a weather delay of 3 hours and 30 minutes, the final threesome teed off closer to 12:55 p.m. local. Henderson’s sister and parents watched on TV. A couple of hours later, that final threesome was still in the top three: Ryu at 11 under, Henderson 10 under, and Yoon nine under, with Nelly Korda threatening three back at eight under. (Korda tied for 8th.)

Just like they did on 9, Ryu and Henderson matched birdies on 10. They went to the 11th tee with the crowd buzzing.

“It’s a battle now,” said one volunteer inside the ropes. If only he were right.

Ryu pushed her lead to two with another long birdie putt on 12, and on 14 Henderson missed the fairway and missed the green and did well to save bogey to keep the deficit three.

But Henderson couldn’t give herself enough good looks. She went bunker to bunker on the par-5 15th. On 16, 17 and 18 she left herself with long birdie tries.

Ryu closed with 70, winning at 13 under — a significant feat given she was 10 shots off the lead after the first round — to clip Yoon by two. Henderson, who shot 72, tied her best finish of the season.

“I’m really happy,” she said. “I feel like I’m back in better form. I feel like I’m close to being really good again which is really exciting.”

Besides it being one of her better starts of the season, she also loved that her ball-striking turned a corner. Her swing felt better. And she was in the final group on a major Sunday, which is a feeling and a rush hard to put into words.

In short, Brooke Henderson is just… happy.

“I feel like it’s just a really exciting time for my family right now,” she said. “God is amazing. Really grateful that my niece is healthy and my sister is doing really well and I’m continuing to improve too. It’s great all around.”

And the best part hasn’t even happened yet. She flies back home tomorrow. Sahalee gets to meet her auntie.

Can she win three in a row? Will she check off the career Grand Slam or Super Slam this year? When will she punch her ticket to the Hall of Fame? This is the LPGA’s biggest moment since…?

For LPGA commissioner Craig Kessler, his first thought was happiness for Korda, who achieved a lifelong dream by summiting a mountain she’d set out to climb when she made her U.S. Women’s Open debut as a 14-year-old at Sebonack on Long Island’s East End. But he also had a question of his own.

How can the LPGA make the most of the transformative gift Nelly Korda has given them?

“Part of my job is to figure out how do we take these moments that are once-in-a-generation moments — Nelly winning four times in the first half of the season, two consecutive majors — how can we parlay that into something that’s great for Nelly and also great for the tour?” Kessler told GOLF in a phone interview Tuesday ahead of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

KESSLER HAS BEEN ON the job for almost a year. A golf lifer who came over from the PGA of America, he took over the LPGA with a vision to transform a sports league that had fallen behind other major women’s sports in terms of what the sum of its parts — world-class athletes with dynamic personalities, during a women’s sports boom and a time where there’s increased interest in golf, both professionally and recreationally — said it could be or should be. That is, a league at the forefront of a cultural explosion, not one that has lagged behind over the past decade.

What Kessler found when he arrived was a challenge bigger than even he thought, but one with clear avenues for quick, positive change if the focus and attention were in the right place.

“I think I was surprised by two things,” Kessler said. “One, just how much opportunity there is here, even more than I had anticipated. And the intensity of the challenge. This is not an organization looking for a single solution. This is an organization with so much opportunity that it requires just an enormous amount of focus across multiple fronts: the broadcast, creating stars, creating an amazing fan experience, reimagining our schedule.”

If you want to understand where Craig Kessler wants to take the LPGA and how he plans to get it there, you have to start with what he has learned about himself since taking the reins.

“My dad used to always say there are a lot of people who think they’re smart and have no problem telling you that,” Kessler said. “But true intelligence comes in the form of questions, in curiosity, in knowing what you don’t know and not being afraid to, well, ask. The people who went far, he said, those who made a difference, big or small, were the ones who were adaptable and open-minded, and more interested in doing something right than in being right.”

Kessler has a vision for where the LPGA should be in five or 10 years. He has ideas and thoughts and flywheels about how to get it there. He arrived and delivered a massive broadcast change that has seen every round shown live for the first time in 75 years. That broadcast has come with enhancements such as drones, more tracers, more cameras, and additional features and improved content to tell the players’ stories. It has been successful. It can improve. Nothing is perfect. He added a new tournament through a deal with Golf Saudi and the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, with a $4 million purse. He plans to reshape the schedule and said the 2027 slate will feature “unbelievable golf courses we’ve never played before.” He wants to elevate every part of the tour for his players, from purses to player dining to social-media content and personal brands.

His first year also has come with mistakes and missteps, most notably the shortening of the Tournament of Champions to 54 holes due to freezing temperatures. It was a decision that Kessler regrets and said kept him up at night for weeks, fearing that he had lost the trust of his players.

But he hasn’t, because Kessler is always asking questions of everyone. Because he’s open and honest and accountable. Because the vision isn’t in concrete, it’s still being shaped, not just by him but by everyone. On tournament week, you’ll find him walking the range talking to players from all parts of his tour, hanging around the Golf Channel set, talking to the media. One thing Kessler wishes he knew when he took this job was how valuable that time is.

“Just be present, be prepared to have authentic conversations, and come in with an open heart and an open mind,” Kessler said. “I wish I had left even more time for myself to do those things.

“I think a year into the job I’m hopefully a better decision-maker and more importantly a better question-asker.”

When Kessler took over, the LPGA was in the middle of a season defined by historic parity. Korda didn’t win in 2025, and at the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship, the question of whether the LPGA needed a dominant star to capture eyeballs was at the forefront. Consensus among the players was that having a deeper tour is better for the overall health of the LPGA, but having a dominant star would be valuable as the league looks at the bigger goal.

“Even if you don’t play golf, you know who Tiger Woods is,” Hall of Famer Lydia Ko said. “Like having that kind of a figure is, yes, very important.”

WHEN KORDA WON SEVEN times in 2024, her success felt like a missed opportunity for the LPGA under the pre-Kessler leadership. The WNBA was in the midst of an explosion, and it felt like Korda could create a similar tidal wave for women’s golf. That didn’t happen. Perhaps the LPGA wasn’t ready. Korda also was reticent to be the kind of standard-bearer the LPGA needed.

So when Kessler took over, there was no hidden manuscript for how to promote a transcendent star on a historic run, should that come to pass.

Of course, you can’t plan for history. It arrives without warning and asks the adaptable to make the most of an opportunity that might not come again.

Korda’s four-win, two-major start this season is a gift for the LPGA. The tour is littered with talented, marketable players, from Charley Hull to Lydia Ko and Rose Zhang. Women’s golf has a stacked group of young amateurs like Asterisk Talley and Kiara Romero, who will arrive shortly. But if you want to introduce them to the masses, if you want to grab and retain eyeballs in a doom-scrolling world dominated by 30-second social-media videos and endless streaming options, you need something to pull them in. You need gravity as an entry point.

After Korda put her name on the Ben Hogan statue outside Riviera, it was up to Kessler, the team at the LPGA and Korda and her team to figure out how to maximize this moment — to use her gravity and stardom to draw in new fans. That included an interview on “The Pat McAfee Show,” a New York City media tour with a stop on the “Today” show, a surprise Nike billboard at Times Square, a visit to the New York Stock Exchange and select interviews with golf media. It’s the first iteration of what Kessler hopes is a roadmap he will regularly employ throughout his tenure.

“Admittedly, this is not a playbook the LPGA had ever developed, right?” Kessler said. “And so we’re building a new muscle, and if I had to describe it in a word, it’s scrappy. It’s calling everyone we know in our network, seeing who has availability, who’s interested, working with Nelly and her team, and figuring out how do we facilitate a process that everybody’s excited about, and my suspicion is every single time Nelly and some of our other stars win, we will get better at this, and ultimately create a playbook that we can replicate every time we have moments where it makes sense to deploy a toolkit like this.”

As Nelly made her way around the Big Apple media circuit, Kessler got a text from someone in the golf space about the moment Korda’s greatness had engineered — one that can and should serve as a foundational building block toward the breakthrough moment the league is trying to capture.

“This is the first time since Michelle Wie West where the LPGA has a global superstar that transcends the sport she’s playing,” Kessler said, recalling the message. “Totally right, I think people are talking about Nelly and the LPGA because she’s found a way to inspire and tap into culture in a way that maybe we haven’t in a little while. Yeah, and that creates an amazing set of opportunities for Nelly and for many of our other stars who are, let’s say, on the verge of breaking through into culture in the same way that Nelly has.”

Where does Kessler want the LPGA to be in five, 10 years? The vision is bold and ambitious, fitting of the current explosive moment in women’s sports. A global sports and entertainment leader that inspires and gives money back to the community. One that has a stable of superstars whose stories transcend golf and are embedded in broader culture. The plan is, to use Kessler’s word, scrappy. It’s resourceful and daring and will take time and more than two hands. He thinks the tour already is “on the path,” but it will “take time to soak in.”

As the African proverb says: If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.

Kessler wants the LPGA to go far. So does Korda.

So the commissioner, who likes to ask questions, and the introspective superstar, who is eager to do her part to boost the LPGA to its desired destination, are forging the path together.

“She’s a deeply thoughtful person,” Kessler said of Korda. “She’s really smart. We’ll have a conversation, and then a day or two later, out of the blue, I’ll get a text or a call, and Nelly says, ‘Hey, I’ve been thinking more about what we spoke about, and here are a few other ideas.’ I tend to ask a ton of questions of our staff, of caddies, of players … and if we have a big decision to make, I often find myself going out and asking questions, and anytime I have a chance to get Nelly’s thoughts, I feel like the tour is better off because of it.

“From our first conversation to sitting next to her at the [KPMG Women’s PGA] Champions dinner last night, she is more comfortable in her own skin, proud of what she represents, eager to inspire women and girls than I’ve ever seen, and what a gift for the LPGA.”

As Kessler speeds toward Year 2 amid the wave of excitement Korda has created and the LPGA’s plan to capitalize on it, his question still hangs in the air: What was the value of the gift Nelly Korda delivered? The answer won’t come next week or even next year. But it will come — and, for the LPGA’s growth, it will be deeply consequential.

When Nelly Korda’s testy, 2-foot-10-inch putt slid into the hole at Riviera Country Club on Sunday, she not only achieved a lifelong dream by winning the U.S. Women’s Open but also delivered the LPGA the breakthrough moment it has needed.

Now comes the hard part.

Back in November, new LPGA commissioner Craig Kessler sat at the dais in Naples at the CME Group Tour Championship and fielded questions from reporters about his plan to elevate women’s golf in the same way that the WNBA, NWSL and other women’s sports have exploded in recent years. Kessler showed he had a vision and ways to get the wheels turning. A new T.V. deal arrived that week, putting every LPGA round on live T.V. and promising an enhanced broadcast. He brought in Aramco to sponsor a big-money event in Las Vegas, talked about reworking the schedule and moved the Chevron Championship to Memorial Park. The plan to grab and keep attention was clear.

Kessler didn’t have all the answers that week. And the biggest question concerned something he had no control over. It seemed unanswerable at the time, but it was clear it would eventually determine how successful his plan would be and the pace at which it would deliver results: Could the LPGA break through to a larger audience with depth and parity? Or would it need a star to transcend the game and reach a wider audience?

“No silver bullets to creating stars,” Kessler said that week.

“You have the best players, you have the most marketable players, and you have the ones who are actually willing to lean in and do the work. It’s the handful of players at the center of that Venn diagram that we are going to invest our resources against in order to create global superstars and create that player and fan connection.”

That Kessler faced these questions the week after Caitlin Clark, who lit the fuse for the WNBA’s explosion, played in the pro-am for the Annika was purely coincidental but it was a sign of what the LPGA likely needed to achieve the growth it desires and the women’s game deserves: a superstar who grabs eyeballs by winning, winning a lot and doing it in a way that demands attention.

The most likely candidate to do this was, of course, Nelly Korda; even her contemporaries noted how vital a resurgent Korda, who went winless in 2025, could be to the league’s popularity, especially in America. The depth and parity are great for the global health of women’s golf. But for American fans and American television audiences, especially those who aren’t golf diehards, stars sell.

“As a tour and even from a fan perspective, yes, it’s great to have somebody like Nelly that was so dominant last year,” Hall of Famer Lydia Ko said in November. “Catches a lot of attention, especially with her — in Nelly’s case, being an American player. That catches a lot of different attention. In the case of even if you don’t play golf, you know who Tiger Woods is. Like having that kind of a figure is, yes, very important.”

Seven months later, Nelly Korda has delivered on her part.

She snapped her winless drought with a 54-hole, weather-shortened win at the Tournament of Champions and then went 2-2-T2 before running away with the year’s first major. She followed that with a win in Mexico, then arrived at the U.S. Women’s Open, the women’s game’s marquee event, held at a world-renowned venue, and won when everyone expected her to and wanted her to.

She has now won the year’s first two majors and should head into the KPMG PGA Championship at the end of the month with a world of hype surrounding her. A win at the Evian or the AIG Women’s Open later this summer will give her the LPGA’s career Grand Slam (four out of five). If she wins both, she’ll be a Super Slam winner, or she’ll have what Ko and others call the real Grand Slam.

Nelly Korda winning the biggest prize in women’s golf, the tournament she has long craved and seemed born to win, and doing so in dramatic fashion on a famed course is a moment for women’s golf. Per NBC, Korda’s U.S. Women’s Open win had an average of 1.3 million viewers on Sunday, peaking at 2.2 million when her final putt narrowly lipped in. That’s the second-highest-rated U.S. Women’s Open since Michelle Wie’s 2014 win at Pinehurst No. 2 (2 million). Only Allisen Corpuz’s win at Pebble Beach in 2023 (1.6 million) has had more average Sunday viewers.

Stars and venues are the LPGA’s ticket to the dance that has been the women’s sports boom of the past few years. Nelly Korda is a superstar and has been for some time. She first reached World No. 1 status five years ago, has a gold medal, now has four majors and is two points away from the Hall of Fame. She should already be a star far outside the world of golf. That she hasn’t already reached the level of Clark, A’ja Wilson, Simone Biles and others speaks to the issues within the LPGA that predate Kessler and the new brain trust — ones they are trying to remedy.

Nelly Korda is a once-in-a-generation American talent, armed with a picture-perfect swing and a charismatic personality that is coming out more and more. She’s winning everything in sight right now and just had a monumental win on a course people know well.

Now it’s up to the LPGA to make the most of the opportunity Nelly Korda’s world-beating golf has created. There should be a full-sell hype machine around Korda over the next few weeks in the lead-up to the KPMG and it should continue into the summer. Putting her on the Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, the second time she has joined this year, is the type of move that’s needed to help introduce her to a larger, non-golf-centric audience that the LPGA is hunting.

Back in November, Kessler was adamant the LPGA didn’t want to put everything on one player or personality to push the game and league higher. “If we are reliant on one person, whether it’s a star or a celebrity, to carry the weight of the Tour on their backs, I think we’ve missed the boat,” Kessler said. “There’s so much magic happening on the LPGA and we have to bring all of it to life.”

That’s a long-term, big-picture view that’s reasonable and measured. The LPGA is indeed littered with great stories and talented, charismatic athletes like Charley Hull, Ko, Rose Zhang, and potential budding stars in Megha Ganne (who just turned pro) and amateurs Asterisk Talley and Kiara Romero. But as Ko noted, “everyone knows Tiger Woods.” Just like everyone knows Caitlin Clark, Michael Jordan, and many others who have elevated their sport and brought new fans into the picture by being a gateway to it.

Nelly Korda can do the same as long as women’s golf and the LPGA make the most of what her 2-foot, 10-inch putt delivered on Sunday.

In addition to winning both of the year’s first two majors, Korda has also logged two additional wins and three runners-up this season in eight starts. The lone non-top-two finish was a T8 last month in Cincinnati.

All of that success has come after multiple changes to her bag late last year, including a switch to the Tour version of TaylorMade’s 2026 TP5x golf ball. Korda was one of the early adopters of the new ball after looking to gain more launch and stopping power with her irons.

“The new TP5x is a game changer for her,” TaylorMade Tour Rep Ryan Ressa said. “When I walked with her after first putting it in play, the ball was noticeably better with her irons. She was playing more aggressively and felt like she could attack pins more freely. She can be way more aggressive with her scoring clubs, which is something she felt like she couldn’t do toward the end of last season.”

The extra spin and check also helps Korda around the greens by allowing her to be more aggressive through the strike.

Korda switched into a Qi4D driver late last year, breaking a streak of using TaylorMade’s “Max” model driver since signing with the company in 2023, and it goes back to her days at Titleist playing their “1” models. That includes the Qi10 Max, which was the driver for her historic, seven-win 2024 season and that she held onto for the entirety of 2025.

She felt the oversized shapes allowed her to turn the ball over more easily.

“The most important thing is the comfort I have over the ball when I look down at the driver,” Korda said. “After that, it’s just if it performs the way I want to.”

The Qi4D does not have that shape, but it does allow manipulation of ball flight through its four adjustable weight ports.

But with every TM staffer seeing ball speed gains with the Qi4D, the Tour team wanted to reintroduce the more pear-shaped profile of the Qi4D to Korda, and after 20 swings, she said, “I actually like this shape better.”

Her final setup included a heavier back heel weight, upright lie angle and a touch more loft, along with the Graphite Design Tour AD-FI shaft.

The golf ball wasn’t the only change Korda made to get more height into the greens, which paid off at Riviera this week. Korda also switched to TaylorMade’s P7CB irons, from the more compact P7MC, late last year.

“I need a little bit more height when it comes to my irons because when we play major championship golf courses, the greens tend to get firmer and faster,” Korda said of the switch. “[P770 and P7CB] give me that so I know that even if I hit a controlled shot, it’s not going to shoot on the green.”

The victory came with Korda’s TaylorMade NK Proto putter, which she switched to last fall as well, and it mimics the shape of the previous putter she used to win six of her seven victories in 2024. However, the NK Proto features TaylorMade’s Pure Roll insert, which has been the catalyst of the company’s Spider mallet platform’s success on the men’s tour with five of the past six major victories.

FORGED FEEL
Incredible feel is a must for having a great wedge game. MG5 has been forged from soft carbon steel and designed with geometry to provide excellent feel with great feedback.
MAXIMUM SPIN
MG5 uses all-new, more aggressive grooves designed to maximize spin. Saw-milled grooves produce tighter tolerances allowing engineers to design steeper walls and sharper radii intended to maximize spin in both dry and damp conditions.
PERFORMANCE IN ALL CONDITIONS
RAW face with Spin Tread technology channels away moisture to help retain spin. The same way that tire treads help your car stay connected to the road, laser-etched channels redirect water at impact and creates more friction between the club face and golf ball to maintain spin in wet conditions.
CRAFTSMANSHIP MEETS CONSISTENCY
Crafted by hand and then milled to perfection. Each wedge and sole grind are precision-milled to eliminate the natural human error that comes with hand polishing. Our grinds deliver unmatched consistency and craftsmanship that players can count on every time.
CHARCOAL FINISH
MG5 debuts a sleek, sophisticated charcoal finish that reduces glare and enhances its aesthetic appeal in the bag.

Thinner than a Human Hair Microcoating is thinner than a human hair and delivers measurable performance advantages: more consistent ball flight, optimized distance, and tight left-to-right dispersion. Korda finished Round 3 in style with three straight birdies, which should give her some confidence coming down the stretch on Sunday. If she were to win, it would represent her fourth major victory and first at the U.S. Women’s Open.

Korda is tied at six under with Sei Young Kim heading into the final round. The LPGA veteran has 13 wins and one major victory in her career.

After a rough first round, it looked like World No. 1 Nelly Korda would be fighting to make the cut at this week’s U.S. Women’s Open. But Korda changed that narrative quickly in Round 2.

The three-time major winner shot a four-under 67, the lowest round of the day, to launch up the leaderboard to two under. That leaves her only two shots off the lead heading into the weekend where she’ll try to capture her first U.S. Women’s Open title.

Fellow American Alison Lee shot a 68 on Friday to reach four under and tie for the lead. She’s knotted with Ruoning Yin.

Jennifer Kupcho is among a large group of players tied at three under heading into Round 3.

Nelly Korda had high hopes to capture her second straight major championship and first U.S. Women’s Open title this week. But after a difficult first round at Riviera, Korda will have some work to do in Round 2.

The World No. 1 started on the back nine and got off to a quick start with a birdie at 11. But back-to-back bogeys followed at 12 and 13. She got back to even par with a birdie at the par-5 1st, her 10th hole of the day, but two more bogeys on her second nine left her with a two-over 73 in the first round.

Here’s everything you need to know to watch the tournament on Thursday, including full U.S. Women’s Open TV coverage, streaming info and Round 1 tee times.

How to watch U.S. Women’s Open on Thursday

At last year’s U.S. Women’s Open, Nelly Korda came tantalizingly close to winning the tournament for the first time in her career. In the end, Korda settled for a T2 behind 2025 winner Maja Stark.

But if there’s any season that Korda has a chance to finally hoist the U.S. Women’s Open trophy, it’s this one. As the LPGA’s best begin the second major of the year today at Riviera, Korda has already racked up many accolades in 2026. She’s won three times, including her third major title at the Chevron Championship. She’s also finished runner-up three times.

You read that right. In only seven tournaments in 2026, Korda has finished outside the top two just one time.
