He told us so. 

A day earlier, hours after the upstart completed its first-ever tournament, Rory McIlroy promised he and his boys with the old tried-and-true would put on a show. At the time, you could argue that he was standing his ground. The LIV Golf Invitational Series, with its Saudi-backed billions, had put the “professional game in disarray,” according to our headline. And the ball was now in the PGA Tour’s course. 

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure what’s going to happen over the final 18 holes here is going to be more entertaining than what other golf was played this week anywhere else,” McIlroy said. 

Maybe you enjoyed the LIV product, and that’s your right. But on Sunday, during the final round of the Canadian Open, the Tour was in a groove. Birdies were abundant at St. George’s. Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan came onto the CBS broadcast and called LIV “an exhibition.” Former world No. 1 Justin Rose flirted with 59, before settling for just 60. 

And McIlroy, one week before the U.S. Open, won. But that is ending. Please stick around. There’s much, much more to see. 

McIlroy and Justin Thomas, two of golf’s biggest names, never left the top of the leaderboard. McIlroy, who started the day sharing a two-shot lead with Tony Finau, birdied 1. And 4. And 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12. He did it in every way, too — during the 6 through 12 stretch, four of his birdies came on putts of less than 4 feet; the other two came on rolls of 31 and 39 feet. His lead was now three. 

McIlroy then bogeyed 13. And 16. And Thomas made his move, fueled by six birdies from holes 6 through 14. His run was all precision — he made no putt longer than 10 feet. Didn’t have to. After 16 holes, McIlroy and Thomas were tied. Then they quickly weren’t.

McIlroy answered back. He birdied 17 after hitting to 4 feet; Thomas bogeyed. The lead was two. McIlroy birdied 18 after hitting to 4 feet again. He shot an eight-under 62, and his victory was by two, over Finau. It was his 21st PGA Tour victory.

Which he knew. And knew whom he had passed. 

“Twenty-first PGA Tour win, one more than someone else,” McIlroy said. “That gave me a little extra incentive today.

— McIlroy birdies the 376-yard, par-4 1st on a 26-foot putt, and he takes a one-shot lead. McIlroy is at 12-under, Finau is at 11-under, Clark is at 10-under, and Burns, Smalley and Thomas are at nine-under.  

— Finau birdies the 465-yard, par-4 2nd on an 18-foot putt, and he moves back into a share of the lead. Finau and McIlroy are at 12-under, Clark and Thomas are at 10-under, and Burns and Smalley are at nine-under. 

— McIlroy birdies the 476-yard, par-4 4th after hitting his approach to 3 feet, and he takes a one-shot lead. McIlroy’s at 13-under, Finau is at 12-under, Clark is at 11-under, and Burns and Thomas are at 10-under. 

— Finau birdies the 436-yard, par-4 5th after hitting his approach to 4 feet, and he moves back into a share of the lead. Finau and McIlroy are at 13-under, Clark is at 11-under, and Burns and Thomas are at 10-under. 

— McIlroy chips in from 31 feet away on the 217-yard, par-3 6th, and he reclaims a one-shot lead. He’s at 14-under, Finau is at 13-under, Clark is at 12-under, and Burns and Thomas are at 10-under. 

— McIlroy birdies the 436-yard, par-4 7th after hitting his approach to 3 feet, and he takes a two-shot lead. McIlroy’s at 15-under, Clark and Finau are at 13-under, and Thomas is at 12-under. 

— McIlroy birdies the 557-yard, par-5 9th after hitting into a greenside bunker with his second shot, and he leads by two. McIlroy’s at 16-under, and Clark, Finau and Thomas are at 14-under. Among the final group, McIlroy and Thomas shot 29 on the front nine, and Finau a 31.

— McIlroy birdies the 363-yard, par-4 10th after nearly chipping in from short of the green, and Thomas also birdies. The scoreboard reads as follows: McIlroy is at 17-under, Thomas and Justin Rose are at 15-under, and Clark and Finau are at 14-under. Notably, Rose is 11-under through 15 holes. 

— McIlroy birdies the 530-yard, par-5 11th after hitting his third shot to 19 inches, Thomas also birdies, and McIlroy continues to lead by two. McIlroy is at 18-under, Thomas is at 16-under, and Clark and Finau are at 15-under. 

— McIlroy birdies the 394-yard, par-4 12th on a 39-foot birdie, and he takes a three-shot lead. McIlroy is at 19-under, Thomas is at 16-under, and Finau, Clark and Rose are at 15-under. Through 12 holes, McIlroy is eight-under, and through 17 holes, Rose is at 11-under.  

— McIlroy bogeys the 208-yard, par-3 13th after three-putting from 41 feet, and his lead drops to two shots. McIlroy is at 18-under, Finau and Thomas are at 16-under, and Rose and Clark are at 15-under. 

— Rose bogeys the 454-yard, par-4 18th after hitting his second shot over the green, and his bid for a 59 falls one shot short. He shoots a 10-under 60 and finishes at 14-under overall. 

— McIlroy misses a 3-footer for birdie on the 564-yard, par-5 15th, and his lead remains one. McIlroy is at 18-under, Thomas is at 17-under, Finau is at 16-under, and Burns is at 15-under.

— McIlroy bogeys the 189-yard, par-3 16th, and his lead is gone. McIlroy and Thomas are at 17-under, Finau is at 16-under and Burns is at 15-under. 

— Thomas bogeys the 494-yard, par-4 17th, and McIlroy birdies it after hitting his third shot to 2 feet, and McIlroy takes a two-shot lead. McIlroy is at 18-under, and Thomas and Finau are at 16-under. 

— McIlroy birdies the 18th after hitting his second shot to 4 feet, he shoots eight-under 62, and he wins by two. It’s his 21st PGA Tour victory.

It’s going to be an epic Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open, where three of the PGA Tour’s biggest stars, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Tony Finau — are set to duke it out for a national title.

For McIlroy, the victory would be quite a defense. He won the Canadian Open in 2019, and since the last two editions were cancelled due to Covid, his back-to-back titles would span three years.

Thomas is seeking his 16th career Tour victory — and this only weeks after claiming his second major championship at the PGA in May.

For Finau, a win on Sunday would mark the third of his career. The momentum appears to be on his side, after posting a sizzling round of 62 on Saturday.

And while he’s not playing in the final grouping, let’s not forget about Sam Burns — arguably the hottest player in the game at the moment. He’s two shots back and looking to notch his fifth career victory and fourth (!) of the season.

Regardless of how things pan out on Sunday, one thing’s for sure: These players are in prime form for yet another national championship at next week’s U.S. Open at The Country Club.

The final grouping on Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open will be a star-studded affair. Rory McIlroy, the defending champion, Tony Finau and Justin Thomas will be grouped together, with McIlroy and Finau each seeking their first win of 2022, and Thomas his second, after his PGA Championship victory last month.

McIlroy fired a five-under 65 in Round 3 to share the top of the leaderboard with Finau, who shot a Saturday 62, at 11 under heading into the final round. The pair and Thomas, who is two back, will tee off at 12:51 p.m. ET.

The penultimate grouping will feature Sam Burns, who is also two back, Wyndham Clark and Alex Smalley. Burns is looking for his third victory in his 2021-22 campaign. They will go off at 12:40 p.m. ET.

Rory McIlroy entertained. And he was entertained. 

Over the next weeks, months and quite possibly years, you’re going to be hearing a lot about “entertained.” But wait, you say. Don’t you know the show you’re watching when you flip on the golf, or pass through the gate? That’s true. You’re not going to see a dunk or a touchdown, though now you can sometimes see Charles Barkley and Tom Brady. Still, that doesn’t mean you should sit on your birdies and eagles, and that’s the message that will be spun from this crowd that hopes to turn golf on its head, the LIV Golf Invitational Series. On Saturday, they completed their first-ever tournament and, along the way, trotted out shotgun starts and neon-colored leaderboards that let out video-game dings, and big cash prizes.

Say what you may, but all of that is different and makes you curious. But a few things are also in play here. One is that last item, the money, which you have undoubtedly heard about by now, though we will repeat it. LIV’s funding is Saudi-based, and LIV’s biggest name explained what that means when Phil Mickelson told biographer Alan Shipnuck his backers were “scary MF’ers.” Still, thousands watched LIV play this weekend, so here we are. 

Which brings us then to the actual golf. Over in London, LIV crowned Charl Schwartzel its first-ever champion. And CBS’ Jim Nantz described his recent resume as such on Saturday: “Charl Schwartzel with his first win of any kind in six years, ranked 126th in the world, he was the victor of this 54-hole event of the tour that’s Saudi backed.” It’s here where we’ll note that the lower-ranked players do often win events, though finishing immediately behind Schwartzel were Hennie Du Plessis (No. 133 in the world), Branden Grace (No. 123) and Peter Uihlein (No. 327). 

And the competition? At the Canadian Open, the PGA Tour’s stop this week, the third-round leaderboard on Saturday read as follows: 1, Tony Finau; 1, Rory McIlroy; 3, Justin Thomas; 3, Sam Burns. The first three will all be in the same final grouping on Sunday. You don’t have to scroll far to find their rankings: Finau is the lowest. At 18. 

And the Tour’s de facto spokesman did the math during this exchange:

Reporter to McIlroy: “With everything that’s gone on in the golf world this week, is there anything in that that would make a win tomorrow feel sweeter or perhaps more significant?”

McIlroy to reporter: “Not necessarily. Every win is sweet, and every win’s significant. I don’t even think personally, for me, like it would be great to win, but I think what a success this tournament is anyway. You look at it out there today. I mean it’s certainly the best atmosphere of any golf tournament going on this week. 

“Yeah, the crowd support is incredible, and yeah, I’m pretty sure what’s going to happen over the final 18 holes here is going to be more entertaining than what other golf was played this week anywhere else.”

Ouch. That last sentence hits where it hurts. If you’re a LIV fan, he’s got you there. If you’re a PGA Tour fan, you’re happy you got McIlroy. And Thomas. And Finau. And Burns. And a cool hockey-themed viewing area this week on the 16th tee at St. George’s. (They’re playing in Canada, remember.) 

LIV play will get better. U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau is signed up and will play in the next event. On Saturday, Masters winner Patrick Reed and fan favorite Pat Perez confirmed their services. Should more lesser-known players cash in, the argument is more big names could follow.

On the Tour side, it won’t have a world-class leaderboard every week. And its warts are well known. But on this Saturday, where, if you believe that first impressions are everything and that LIV needed to capitalize because of that, it was McIlroy who was being entertained — by his group at its finest. 

And had Thomas feeling … cheesy. A reporter had asked him this: “At one point today, I think there were seven players in the top 25 in the world ranking in the top of the leaderboard; it’s moving a little bit. What do you think that says about this tournament and specifically about the PGA Tour, what it can deliver in terms of entertainment?”

“Yeah, it’s really cool,” Thomas said. “Obviously with everything going on — this week was going to be very special regardless — but I think it just, I mean it makes, I mean, without sounding cheesy, it makes me pretty happy inside seeing this. There’s no other place I would want to be playing, and it’s just, obviously with a tournament like this and the history that it has and how long it’s been played, had a lot of great past champions and venues and drama. 

“And it looks like it has a potential tomorrow to produce a little bit more of that and create some more history.”

The second round of 2022 RBC Canadian Open begins Friday morning at St. George’s Golf & Country Club. Here’s what you need to know to watch Round 2 on TV or online.

Previewing Canadian Open Round 2

Since this is the first Canadian Open in two years, the 2019 winner is still considered the defending champion. That player happens to be four-time major champion Rory McIlroy, and in Thursday’s opening round Rory showed no signs that he planned on giving up his title.

McIlroy shot a four-under 66 on Day 1 at St. George’s G&CC, putting him just three shots off the early lead held by Wyndham Clark. McIlroy’s playing partner, 2022 PGA champion Justin Thomas, settled for a one-under 69 on Thursday.

For Friday’s second round, McIlroy, Thomas and Corey Conners will switch to an afternoon tee time of 12:53 p.m. ET as they fight to position themselves well for a weekend charge. You can stream the second round via PGA Tour Live on ESPN+, or watch the telecast on Golf Channel.

Rory McIlroy, yes, will watch a replay. 

But, no, he won’t be wearing a Team Majesticks or Fireballs hat or shirt.

“What are the other ones, like Iron Heads? I have no idea,” McIlroy said. “Certainly not going out to buy any team merchandise any time soon.”

Call it a light moment in one of the most peculiar days in the history of professional golf, one that saw an alternative series beginning, unquantified suspensions being served — and the established tour rolling on.

Should you need to be caught up, the Saudi-funded LIV Invitational Series began play Thursday at the Centurion Club in London, and among its field were 17 players with affiliation with the PGA Tour. While the established brand could do nothing to stop the former, it took action on the latter, as it promised it would for months, when Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said via a note to its membership that all of the players would be suspended or “no longer eligible to participate in PGA Tour tournament play.”

Oh, and Tour golf was played Thursday, too — it’s Canadian Open week, and the thought of a Tour tournament going up against an upstart series with Tour players is the meat of all this commotion — and the action at St. George’s in Toronto did not entirely shield players from the other news of the day. 

Unsurprisingly, McIlroy and Justin Thomas backed their commish. Two of the Tour’s biggest stars were playing in Canada and not England, after all, and have also been pro-Tour for months. 

“I think at this point, Jay’s been pretty transparent in terms of he’s just going to act within the tournament regulations and the rules that are set for a PGA Tour member,” McIlroy said. “All he’s doing is basically going by the book.

“I think that the majority of the membership that are here this week and that haven’t went and played elsewhere really appreciate that. So I think he’s done the right thing because these guys have broken rules and done things outside of the tournament regulations, and because of that, there are going to be consequences, I guess.”

Said Thomas: “I’m pleased. I think anybody that’s shocked clearly hasn’t been listening to the message that Jay and everybody’s been putting out. They took that risk going into it, whether they thought it was a risk or not.

“Like I’ve said the whole time, I have great belief and great confidence in the PGA Tour and where we’re going and continuing to grow to, and those guys just aren’t going to be a part of it.”

The questions now are speculative. 

What’s next? That question was even asked in the Tour’s note — along with “can these players come back” and “can they eventually play PGA Tour Champions” — and Monahan wrote there that “we’ll approach them [the questions] in the same way we have this entire process: by being transparent and respecting the PGA Tour regulations that you helped establish.” Notably, LIV itself responded to Monahan’s note with one of its own, saying that it’s “vindictive and it deepens the divide between the Tour and its members. … This is certainly not the last word on this topic.”

Unknown, too, with one day in the books — and seven more events this year — is whether more Tour players join. Earlier in the week, McIlroy believed that the battle would “fracture the game.” On Thursday, Thomas wasn’t sure how things would unfold. 

“They’re obviously throwing so much money at people that it’s very hard to turn down,” he said. “I don’t care what you say in terms of that people play for different reasons. It doesn’t matter who you are or what it is; everything has a number. They’re reaching that number for some people, and I hope that they don’t get others. But I think a very strong core group of us is very stable and firm in our position, and I hope that it stays that way.”

Then there is the potential awkwardness between Tour players and LIV players; both will be in attendance next week at the U.S. Open after the USGA announced on Tuesday that it would not ban those playing in the Saudi series. Earlier this week, though, Thomas said he wouldn’t expect to treat players differently — “I don’t dislike D.J. [Dustin Johnson] now. I don’t think he’s a bad dude. I’m not going to treat him any differently. It’s like he’s entitled to choose as he wishes — and he stuck to that theme on Thursday. 

“I saw D.J. last week at home, and it was fine,” Thomas said. “I would say a lot of guys, myself included, aren’t at a U.S. Open to socialize. I’m not there to have a conversation and catch up. I’m sure it will be awkward. When I saw D.J. last week, I didn’t know what to say, if it was a congrats or a bye or whatever it was.

“It is what it is. I think we’re all grown-ups, and we understand there’s going to be some guys you can make some jokes to and some guys you have to leave it alone, but in the end, we’re all there to win a major.”

But that’s next week’s concern. And this week still has another question.

Would McIlroy watch LIV events? 

“I think like everyone else, I’m intrigued and I’m a fan of golf,” he said. “I’ve got quite a few guys over there that I call friends that are playing. Yeah, of course I’ll see it and watch it and see what all the fuss is about.”

The stars aren’t taking the week off before the 2022 U.S. Open, instead they’re in Toronto battling for a different national championship. That includes the two 2022 major champions, Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas, and the defending Canadian Open champion, Rory McIlroy.

Thomas and McIlroy played together in Thursday’s first round alongside Corey Conners, and both players got off to solid starts after teeing off early in the morning. McIlroy shot a 66 to reach four under, while Thomas gave a few shots away late to finish at one under. They’ll try to ride that momentum in Round 2 at St. George’s G&CC.
