SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — At 7:30 p.m. on Sunday way out on Long Island, Wyndham Clark marched into the interview tent at Shinnecock Hills. An entourage of TV cameras, photographers, USGA staffers, volunteers and media members followed.

There was a medal around his neck and a spring in his step. He hopped up a couple of stairs, took a seat and plopped an 18-inch, sterling silver trophy on top of a table. He looked relieved.

“Man,” he said a few minutes later, “they definitely didn’t want me to win.”

EVERYONE KNOWS IT’S NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE to blow the kind of lead Wyndham Clark built at the 126th U.S. Open. Six strokes? Please. It had happened 21 times before, and only one player — Greg Norman at the 1996 Masters — had lost a 54-hole major lead of six shots or more. The photos of a crumbling Norman have been seared into our brains. And those images — and the Shark’s name — come up every time a seemingly insurmountable lead like this surfaces.

Clark dominated the first three days of this U.S. Open. Sixty-four on Thursday. Sixty-nine on Friday. The course got tougher on Saturday, but so did Clark. He shot 70.

He entered Sunday seven under and with a commanding lead over four others at one under, a group that included World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who also happened to be celebrating not just Father’s Day but his 30th birthday on Sunday. Oh, and if he were to win this tournament, he would have been just the seventh player to complete the career Grand Slam, joining Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

Now that’s a story people wanted to see. Clark was simply in the way of the fairytale ending, and not for the first time.

Three years ago, at the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, a relatively unknown Clark was tied for the lead with uber-popular Rickie Fowler through 54 holes. They were in the final pairing; Rory McIlroy was one back. Clark was far from the favorite then — McIlroy was trying to snap a lengthy major drought and Fowler, one of the most beloved golfers of this generation, was still after that elusive first major title.

But Clark and his mental-game coach, Julie Elion, had a plan. Clark said the pressure was all on Fowler, who perhaps needed the victory more than anyone. And every time Clark heard someone cheer Fowler’s name, Elion told him to have that simply trigger Clark to remember his goals, which was to be cocky.

“Now maybe they’ll be chanting my name in the future,” Clark said that night, after he shot 70 to win by one.

Well, not quite.

In the years since, Clark has found himself embroiled in controversy. It’s not necessarily on the Patrick Reed level, but in a sport with so few villains, sometimes it takes only a few notable transgressions to qualify.

Clark was scrutinized for how he handled a rules situation at the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational and blasted on national TV by analyst Brandel Chamblee. A year later, he threw a club at the PGA Championship and issued a public apology. A month after that he bashed in historic Oakmont Country Club lockers after he missed the cut at this tournament and issued an apology some thought was both half-hearted and much too late.

The difficult thing about changing public perception is that it can be hard to change public perception. One thoughtful press conference or public-relations campaign usually isn’t enough. Opinions are stubborn and fans not easily fooled.

These “lows,” as Clark, now 32, has referred to them, recently come to light as his game turned a corner. He won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February 2024 but didn’t win again until last month, when he shot 30 under at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. He finished third a week later and tied for 11th in his last start before the U.S. Open, the RBC Canadian Open, making him a semi-trendy pick heading into this week.

And in three days on Long Island, Clark sucked the life out of this tournament. He got a good draw, scrambled well, putted like Loren Roberts and made nearly every crucial 7-foot par save he faced. He had the tournament by the throat, although Scheffler worked his way into the final pairing and created the storyline the fourth round needed.

But even Clark wasn’t prepared for Sunday at the U.S. Open and the one-sided nature of it. When Clark and Scheffler arrived to the first tee at 2:24 p.m., they received a nice ovation; it even seemed nonpartisan. But that did not last.

Fans sang “Happy Birthday” to Scheffler and waited patiently for this final group to put balls in the air. Scheffler hit first, then Clark. Then someone yelled before Clark’s ball had even reached its apex.

“Crash and burn, Wyndham!”

On Clark’s approach from the 1st hole, someone in the Founder’s Club, the luxe balcony hospitality tent left of the 1st fairway, yelled for the leader’s ball to get in the fescue. On the par-3 2nd, Clark missed well left and then had his chip roll slightly over the green. Some fans urged it to keep rolling.

“It’s brutal,” said one volunteer, looking behind him at the grandstands in disgust. “Cheering like that for a bad shot?”

It didn’t stop.

Before Clark teed off on 4, a fan yelled, “Don’t choke, Wyndham!” and was promptly removed by security. A couple more fans were reportedly sent home during the day as well. When Clark hit his approach, he seemed to receive a nice applause. It was such a rarity up until that moment that this reporter — who did not see where the ball landed — made note of it, only to find out the ball had landed 20 yards right of the green. That’s what they cheered for.

Near 5 green, two fans got into a shouting match when one told the other he didn’t care for his aggressive, anti-Clark remarks. While not everyone yelled directly at Clark, it seemed largely a collective effort as fans tried to will Scheffler shots closer to the hole and urge Clark’s to keep rolling, catch a ridge and plummet toward the abyss.

“It’s pretty rare in an Open championship or a major to have fans kind of boo against your shots or cheer for bad shots,” Clark said. “That was tough, but sometimes being the underdog is nice. Anytime someone said something negative to me, I replaced it with something positive.”

On 6, one fan yelled for Clark’s approach to “splash!” in the sand. On 7, the tricky par-3 Redan hole, a fan yelled for Clark’s ball to “get in the bunker!” It did. One fan thought the heckle was so humorous he even whipped out his cell phone, called a buddy and relayed just how funny it was that someone had yelled such a thing. It got so bad that on the 8th hole, Elion, Clark’s mental coach, had to leave the course and reset inside.

In situations like this, it’s sometimes unclear how they evolve. Do they really dislike Wyndham Clark this much? Or is it simply they want Scottie Scheffler to win that badly? Or perhaps they want to be a part of history. Wouldn’t it be a thrill to see Scheffler capture the career Grand Slam in person? (“And he even did it on his birthday!” they’d tell their friends.)

“Some of it’s self-deserved,” Clark said. “I kind of brought it on myself, but I also get it, too. Scottie was going for the career Grand Slam, and it hasn’t happened very often. It was tough, but I’m proud of myself that I battled through.”

It got to the point where if Clark heard someone cheer for him, he’d joke with his caddie, “Oh, there’s one person that likes me!” He said his prep in Ryder Cups and Presidents Cup, as well as playing in the RBC Canadian Open a couple of weeks ago — where he trolled diehard Canadian hockey fans by wearing a USA jersey during one hole — had helped.

“They were pretty harsh on me the last day [in Canada], so I think all of that combined kind of led to this moment where, alright, I’ve been in this position,” Clark said. “It sucks being the underdog or getting rooted against, but I can pull through, and there’s nothing like winning kind of an away game.”

Those with tickets to sporting events are allowed to cheer for favorites and even against their rivals, but when it gets ugly they can be removed (it says so on the back of their ticket badges). Sixty miles away from here, at the Bethpage Black Ryder Cup last fall, Rory McIlroy received a significant amount of hatred from American fans and PGA of America executives even apologized to him. This today was not that kind of ugly, but it was still odd, especially with two American golfers facing off in a final pairing as they played for America’s national championship.

And while they rooted against Clark and cheered for his ball to fall into bunkers and laughed when it didn’t stop on greens, fans yelled “Happy Birthday!” and “Happy Father’s Day!” and “Hook ’em!” to Scheffler, who is logical enough to think it all might have felt a little uncomfortable.

“I think sometimes it can get a little too much when balls are kind of going off greens and you start hearing cheers; that felt a bit much to me,” Scheffler said. “Being in the arena is not for everybody, and I think it shows a lot about Wyndham, how he handled not only this golf course but I think the crowd today.”

Through it all, Clark limped to the turn. He made bogeys on 2, 5 and 7 and failed to make a birdie. But his biggest competition was no longer Scheffler, who shot one over on the front and eventually tied for 4th. Three pairings ahead of them, Sam Burns was making moves. The 29-year-old — who is Scheffler’s best friend and housemate this week — birdied 1, 3, 5 and 8. His final birdie came on 16, and after he missed makable birdie tries on 17 and 18 he signed for 67 and took the clubhouse lead at three under.

Clark shot 38 on the front and dropped to four under. He birdied 10 and bogeyed 13, but his lead moved to two when he drained a 25-footer for birdie on 16. A messy three-putt bogey on 17 added to the drama.

Clark walked to the 18th tee box; he needed to make a 4 to win a major title. Burns waited on the range, just in case.

AT 6:30 SUNDAY EVENING, the gallery ropes along the first hole were on the ground. A handful of kids chased each other and rolled down the fairway. The tournament was nearly complete and the rest of the course mostly deserted. A crowd started to emerge a couple hundred yards away on 18, although it still wasn’t on Clark’s side. There was another call from the grandstands for Clark’s approach to get in the bunker, but it instead stayed on the front of the green, 53 feet away. The crowd swelled around him, up in the stands and on the surrounding hillside. He was in the arena.

“Two putts to win the U.S. Open,” one fan said to his buddy.

Clark, you know by now, won this 126 U.S. Open. He nestled his birdie try to 9 inches, and the tap-in was all but a formality. The crowd’s reaction was muted.

Up ahead on the hill near the clubhouse, two parents watched with their son as Clark and the storm around him marched toward scoring. The 8-year-old was still playing with a wedge Alex Fitzpatrick had given him, but his father tried to get his attention as Clark approached.

“Hey,” the father said, nudging his son’s shoulder. “Pay attention to this.”

The boy looked up as a two-time major champion walked by, his detractors be damned.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — It’s hard being the new guy.

At the Masters, Ludvig Aberg knows. He’s new. Brand-new. Not only to Augusta National, where he’ll play this week in his first-ever Masters — but also to all of major championship golf.

It’s easy to forget that Aberg’s career number of major starts is zero. Most players of his caliber have major championship peach fuzz by the time they’ve reached their early 20s, usually by way of amateur championship victories or special exemptions. Aberg is not one of them. He played valiantly as an all-world youngster at Texas Tech, a player talented and decorated enough to earn an invitation onto the PGA Tour straight out of school. He contended regularly and even won as a Tour rookie, then starred in the Ryder Cup in Rome as a particularly fearsome piece of a dominating European side. Now he’s the ninth-ranked player in the world and easily one of pro golf’s most gifted young’uns — talented enough to earn a Masters pre-tournament press conference before ever playing a tournament round.

That resume does not equate to zero major championship starts. But that’s where Aberg finds himself on Tuesday afternoon in Augusta — a Masters rookie on the brink of his first-ever major start.

Wyndham Clark knows the feeling. He wouldn’t have believed you if you’d told the reigning U.S. Open champ he’d win a major championship before he earned a start at Augusta. But the hardware on his mantel and the glimmer in his eyes Tuesday indicate otherwise.

Until about 11 months ago, Clark wasn’t on anybody’s pro golf radar. But then he broke through at the Wells Fargo for his first pro win, and then again, a month later, at the U.S. Open. And then again, eight months later, at Pebble Beach. Now, he’s entering the Masters as the fourth-ranked player in the world — and a Masters rookie on the brink of his first-ever start.

It would be a stretch to call these two golfers sleepers, what with their prodigious ability and history of tournament success. Vegas, which has both golfers among the tournament favorites, agrees. But there’s a small bit of history working against them: Not since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979 has a player arrived at the Masters a rookie and exited a champion.

But among the flood of press conferences on Tuesday at Augusta National, there was the prevailing sense that these two rookies might be different from the rest.

The difference, it seems, starts on the cellular level. Both Clark and Aberg are prolific ball strikers, the kind who can overpower a golf course with the sheer force of their golfing might. On Tuesday at the Masters, both golfers smothered the range with blistering drives that carried on tight fades, flushed irons that hit small targets, and hit crisp chips that scared pin placements.

But on a morning when Tiger Woods spoke at length about the experience and headiness needed to survive at Augusta National — and about how that experience benefits those playing in the event well into their 40s — it also became clear that both Clark and Aberg possess something deeper than athletic ability. Every Masters rookie has a driver they can hit far and straight, but not all of them have the mental makeup to do it for 72 holes under immense pressure. These two Masters rookies do — and that’s what sets them apart.

“I think there’s a difference between people who can win consistently on the PGA Tour and majors and maybe someone who wins every once in a while,” Clark said Tuesday. “I think if you win once every blue moon, I think that’s just a great week and you really had everything clicking that week. But I think to win multiple times and in major, I think that there is a little bit of a mental shift. I’m not saying I know what that shift is, but I know I worked really hard in the mental game. And so when I found myself leading the U.S. Open and then winning a U.S. Open, it felt like a regular event. I think maybe that’s the shift, I think that’s what needs to be done.”

Aberg agreed.

“I’m trying to embrace it,” he said. “I’m not trying to push it away. I’m not trying to fight it. I think that’s one of the key things.

“It’s also just golf, and it’s just me and my 14 clubs.”

This attitude is what endeared Aberg to his current caddie, the veteran looper Joe Skovron, who jumped from Rickie Fowler’s bag to Tom Kim’s, and then jumped from Kim’s to Aberg’s.

“He’s just so mentally mature,” Skovron told me recently. “He’s got a good perspective when something goes wrong. He can deal with it and move on. His ability level is super high, and yet he just wants to keep getting better.”

Aberg says he’ll be leaning on Skovron’s advice this week to help him navigate the more nuanced difficulties of Augusta National — and he’ll need to. The Masters is a brute of a tournament for the most experienced players. For those without experience, it can be easy to get out of place.

“This golf course gets you to chase things a little more than other golf courses,” Rory McIlroy said Tuesday. “If you make a bogey or if you get yourself out of position, it always tempts you to do something you think you can do.”

The temptation of Augusta National is a frequent cause of youthful ejection. But so is the pressure. The Masters is golf’s Super Bowl, as even the hilariously underwhelmed Aberg admitted on Tuesday. There’s no knowing how you respond until you have to.

But perhaps it helps that these guys just don’t know yet. There’s callous in youth, but also confidence.

“My first four or five years on the PGA Tour I learned all the ways how not to win and how not to handle myself in pressure moments,” Clark said. “As I’ve now found myself in more of those moments, I feel so much more relaxed. My thoughts are slower. I’m taking everything as it comes.”

Of course, it’s easy to speak confidently from the comfort of a Tuesday presser — and a little harder from under the gun in the shadows of Amen Corner late on Sunday afternoon. How will Aberg and Clark respond, should the chips fall in a historic way for either of them?

Their answers Tuesday were revealing.

“I mean, stats like that are meant to be broken,” Clark said defiantly when asked about the rookie winless streak.

Aberg was even less impressed.

“I honestly didn’t know that stat up until just now,” he said with a laugh.

CROMWELL, Conn. — You see a lot of amazing things at PGA Tour events. Stuff that recreational golfers would have no chance at emulating. A 350-yard high draw into the fairway; a snaking lag putt to within inches; a stinger through a gap in the trees.

And, occasionally, a golf swing drill that would terrify the rest of us.

Which brings us to Wyndham Clark, a rising star on the PGA Tour who used an eye-catching drill during his practice round on TPC River Highlands’ drivable 15th hole.

Clark took his setup, then his caddy pulled the driver from his bag and held it about about an inch over the bottom-end of the grip as Wyndham took his swing.

Clark’s coach, GOLF Top 100 Teacher Boyd Summerhays, who’s on-site this week at the Travelers Championship, has a simple message for the golfers looking to learn from this drill: “Clubface is king.”

The direction the clubface is pointing at impact primarily determines where the golf ball is going to go. Clark’s tendency is to roll the clubface shut through impact. This drill is designed to help with that, he says: By giving him an obstacle to swing around, it forces Wyndham to keep his hands lower at impact, and release the club more around his body — all of which help him control the clubface, which again, is king.

As for those of you at home looking to learn from this drill: Stay away from it if you’re a slicer. If you tend to get stuck, with a miss that’s either a high hook or a block, this could potentially help. Though we suggest using a pool noodle or something else you wouldn’t mind breaking by mistake if the drill goes wrong. Clark, being a Tour player, doesn’t have to worry about that.

A crowded leaderboard (and crowded day for golf) greet Sunday at Riviera for the final round of the 2021 Genesis Invitational. Below is everything you need to know about the tournament’s purse information, including payout and winner’s share.

It’s Sunday at the Genesis Invitational and we’ve got an absolutely packed day for golf. The top half of the field will play somewhere between 18 and 27 holes on Sunday after third-round play was suspended due to darkness on Saturday.

As for where things stand on the leaderboard, Sam Burns leads (as he has for the majority of the week) by a handful of strokes over the remainder of a crowded leaderboard. Burns (-9) is up by two strokes over the remainder of the field as he makes the turn during his third round of play Sunday. With just about 25 holes to protect his lead (and plenty of challenges and challengers lurking), Burns has his work cut out for him to emerge victorious Sunday afternoon.

Jordan Spieth is once again in the thick of things, though high winds and fading sun eventually played a role in five bogeys throughout his third round Saturday. Spieth (-4) has his work cut out for him to climb back into contention Sunday.

Also in the mix is Dustin Johnson. The World No. 1 is 7 under, two strokes back of Burns and alongside Matthew Fitzpatrick and Max Homa in a tie for second place.

A Sunday filled with leaderboard jockeying led to a photo finish at the Bermuda Championship from Port Royal Golf Course. Here’s how it all went down.

The winner: Brian Gay (seven-under 64; 15-under overall)

How it happened: Doc Redman held the 54-hole lead at 10 under, but a lackluster Sunday performance opened the door for someone to kick down — and a trio of players obliged. Denny McCarthy came out of nowhere to vault himself into contention with a final-round, eight-under 63. The blistering performance was enough to land him comfortably inside the top five, but not enough to force a playoff with either of the names above him on the leaderboard.

Instead, the tournament came down to two: Brian Gay and Wyndham Clark. Gay (-8) and Clark (-9) entered Sunday neck-and-neck, and the two would battle all afternoon at Port Royal. Clark jumped out to an early lead, building a three-stroke advantage over the field with seven birdies through the first 11 holes, but it wouldn’t be enough to separate himself from Gay late. The two pulled even after Clark bogeyed the par-3 16th (his first bogey or worse on the closing stretch all week), but Gay gave the stroke right back after making bogey on the 17th.

After a miraculous birdie on the 18th by Gay, he and Clark headed into a playoff, where a birdie on the first playoff hole sealed the deal for Gay.

Biggest shot: There’s no question, the best shot of the day belongs to Gay, who stuffed his approach from the rough on the 18th to a little over 2 feet, then made the birdie putt to tie for the lead. Not only did the birdie cement Gay atop the leaderboard, but it also placed all the pressure on the 26-year-old Clark, who had just teed off on the 18th behind Gay.

Why it matters: The win is the first for Gay since the Humana Championship in 2013 (!). The 48-year-old Gay now holds five career PGA Tour victories, the same number as Rickie Fowler.

A card confirmed: Will Zalatoris earned special temporary membership on the PGA Tour on Sunday. The Korn Ferry Tour star finished the week in Bermuda at eight under and finished T-16. With the finish, the 24-year-old secured himself entrance to every PGA Tour event through the remainder of the 2021 season. The membership is just the latest feather in Zalatoris’ cap following a T-6 finish at the U.S. Open in September.

What’s next: The PGA Tour turns up the heat in the last open field event prior to the Masters, the Houston Open. Memorial Park Golf Course is expecting many of the game’s best players in attendance as they take advantage of the final opportunity to prepare for Augusta National. Viktor Hovland, Jason Day and Phil Mickelson are among the players in the field in Houston this week.

Turns out, Harrison had already asked Clark. Over a couple of cocktails at the Tap Room at Pebble Beach, someone suggested that Clark would be a good bachelor.

“[Harrison] goes, ‘Oh that’d be perfect,” Clark said. “We’d start off in Ireland and then we go to these golf courses.’”

There’s just one small hitch. To be the Bachelor, you must be on the show before being the lead. But for those of you who fit in the Venn diagram intersection of golf fan/Bachelor fan, there may be hope yet.

“I said, ‘Hey, if you want a current athlete, then let’s do this,’” Clark said. “I’d be an incredible Bachelor.”

Clark even went so far as to cast George Strait as his musical guest who would serenade the ladies on his behalf.
