Pro’s ‘whirlwind’ week started with U.S. Open dream. Now, he’s on the verge of another

Cooper Dossey’s week has been a “whirlwind.”

The third-year Korn Ferry Tour finished last week’s tournament in Columbia, South Carolina, in a tie for 27th. Then, he and his brother, his full-time caddie Luke, drove to Charlotte and hopped a plane to Dallas so that Cooper could make his all-important Monday tee time at Dallas Athletic Club. They got into the house around midnight. Cooper Dossey got some sleep, then woke up on Monday and qualified for the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. Dossey finished third in the Dallas sectional behind medalist Peter Uihlein and Tom Kim, but that was good enough to secure one of the nine spots up for grabs at Shinnecock.

“Definitely a moment I’ll never forget,” Dossey told the Korn Ferry Tour ahead of this week’s event in Knoxville. “My wife was there, my son, my mom, my cousin. It was unbelievable. I still can’t believe it.

“It still hasn’t hit met yet. But I’m thankful for all the people who have congratulated me. It definitely makes it feel more real when the people that are close to you congratulate you. It’s not just my first major, it’s a lot of people in my life’s first major, too.”

While Cooper Dossey secured his place at Shinnecock Hills in three weeks, he had little time to relish in the achievement of that lifelong goal. Still grinding to get his PGA Tour card, Cooper and Luke had to hop back on a plane from Dallas to Atlanta, then rent a car and drive four hours to Knoxville, Tennessee, for this week’s Visit Knoxville Open on the Korn Ferry Tour.

In his first two years on the Korn Ferry Tour, Dossey has finished 76th and 44th in points. Last year, he entered the final round of Q School in position to earn one of the final five cards. However, he shot 5-over in the final round, meaning he had to head back to the Korn Ferry Tour to keep grinding toward his dream.

Dossey has yet to win on the PGA Tour’s feeder circuit. He has been close. He finished T2 at the Astara Chile Classic earlier this year and is currently 13th in points on the KFT. The top 20 get their PGA Tour cards for the 2027 season.

After Cooper and Luke Dossey arrived in Knoxville, Cooper got some rest while Luke walked the course. Cooper Dossey opened with a 6-under 65 and backed it up with a 64 on Friday. He entered Saturday’s third round one shot behind Doc Redman, but fired a bogey-free 63 to take the lead by two heading into the final round.

A win on Sunday would put Cooper Dossey in a great position to secure a PGA Tour card for 2027. The prospect of achieving two lifelong dreams in one week is hard for anyone to comprehend. But after years of grinding his way to the cusp of his dreams, Cooper Dossey has found peace. He and his wife recently had a son, and he’s happy no matter what the scorecard says. After spending his life digging it out of the dirt, Cooper Dossey is ready to accept that his dream will arrive when it’s meant to.

“I feel like my life off the golf course is in a better place,” Dossey said Saturday after his round. “I feel like my attitude on the golf course is in a lot better place. I’m OK if golf was taken away from me now. I don’t think I was OK with that two years ago.

“I want to be on the PGA Tour and I’m really hungry to get there. But I feel like I have a different mindset on how I can achieve that. Because I don’t get to choose when I get to the PGA Tour, or if I ever do…. I’m OK with whatever happens tomorrow. I’m just excited to have the adrenaline rush out there. I’m excited to do this with my brother and have Ashley and Tucker out here. That means more to me, coming off 18 and seeing my wife and my son, then if I were to be able to hold a trophy.”

Win or lose on Sunday, Cooper Dossey already has his next month planned out.

That car he rented to get from Atlanta to Knoxville? He has it for a few more weeks. He’ll drive from Knoxville to Raleigh. Then, after next week’s tournament, he’ll drive Raleigh to Greenville. Following that event, he’ll drive back to Atlanta and hop a plane to Amarillo. From there, he flies from Amarillo to Shinnecock for his U.S. Open debut.

“It’s been a whirlwind,” Dossey told KFT.

One that could change everything for Cooper Dossey.
