Welcome to Fully Fit 2026, GOLF’s new platform for providing you with real-golfer insights into what 2026 gear might be best suited for your game. The quest for the perfect iron set is never really a straight line.

As mentioned in my opening analysis during Fully Fit, I’m getting older (49), my game is a mess due to lack of playing and practice and I’m just at that point where my eyes are looking for comfort and fun VS precision and responsiveness.

I’m that guy who wanted a Porsche 911 for years, and now, at 49, vibed-out minivans hold more appeal. Make sense?

But what’s the end game? Why can’t I just find one set of sticks?

Well, the answer is actually quite fun… I found a bunch of them; they all work, and I’ll explain how and why.

Set 1: Cobra 3DP Tour, my unicorns.

The journey started with a fascination for a genuine new idea: the Cobra 3DP Tour irons.

On the coastal terrain, these irons were exceptionally stable. Total distance consistency was remarkable because the strike didn’t need to be dead-center to maintain ball speed. But while they served their purpose beautifully, this gig provides new gear to be tested and new fitters to learn from.

Next came a shift toward a more compact, tour-inspired shape with the PXG 0311 T Gen8. The Tour profile is arguably one of the cleanest shapes they’ve engineered—thin top line, minimal offset, and a short blade length that just looks right at address. The magic here is their updated weighting system that allows you to create nuanced “bias” in an iron head. This (like Cobra 3DP) is a new form of customization that really speaks to me.

I took them out to the Morris County Golf Club Member-Guest. I hit them great overall, but I ran into a persistent left miss on off-speed shots. Why? Because, against the advice of counsel, I overshot the heel weighting while trying to chase a specific shot shape and mitigate ANY right, which threw a heavy, long left miss into the setup.

Even with that left miss, two great things stood out from that week: first, the sheer level of customization you can achieve with their perimeter weights is unmatched; second, the technology actually works exactly how they say it does. Change the weights, change the flight—I just proved it a little too well.

I LOVE THESE IRONS!

Going through this phase underscored how much a sole design impacts delivery. The feel of a pure, single-piece forging is hard to replicate with multi-material construction. Ball speed stayed incredibly tight relative to swing speed, and the spin characteristics were exactly what you want for holding firm greens out of the rough.

The flight was stable and predictable. But the pursuit of optimization never truly stops when you’re searching for that ultimate balance of speed and control. I also appreciate the fact that optically, although this is a player’s distance iron, they look like any tour cavity-back on the market. Compact shape, great lines, and a long iron to short iron progression for launch.

This brings us to the present workspace setup, where two options are going head-to-head. The Srixon ZXi combo approaches performance by blending a multi-piece forged face in the ZXi5 long irons (5-6) with a single-piece forging in the ZXi7 scoring irons (7-PW).

Its primary traits are massive ball speed and spin consistency driven by its i-FORGED and MainFrame face technologies. We all know how well these things feel and get through the ground in any condition, and to be fair, I played them for a while last year when I started with Golf.com. I loved them, actually, just hadn’t tried them with Nippon 120X, so here we are.

This is an ongoing experiment to see if this type of platform works best for me, like X-Forged Max the Srixon combo has that “it” factor of look and feel, and it doesn’t hurt that on Tour they still remain one of the alpha irons out there.

On the other side of the bay sits the project we’ve been dialing in, and it’s a completely different animal. This isn’t off-the-rack; it’s a highly planned blending of three distinct Ping platforms to build a progressive matrix. We started with the i540 in the 5-iron to give me that high-launch, high-ball-speed floor where my speed typically drops off. From there, it transitions into the i240 for the 6- and 7-irons, offering a perfect bridge of mid-iron forgiveness and stability, before moving into the pure, fully-forged Blueprint S for the scoring clubs (8-PW).

To make this mix work seamlessly, we bent the entire set to Power Spec lofts, creating a perfectly linear gapping progression: a 23.5° 5-iron, 28° 6-iron, 32° 7-iron, 36° 8-iron, 40° 9-iron and a 44° pitching wedge. Built 1-degree upright with Nippon Modus 120 X shafts at a D3 swingweight, the build feels incredibly unified. This set is built around problem-solving mis-hits.

On the TrackMan, this progressive matrix solves my north-to-south dispersion issue.

The Blueprint S short irons give me total control over the spin axis and launch angle when I want to flight a wedge down, while the i240 and i540 heads ensure that my long-iron ball speeds don’t bunch up and stay in a fun spot when I hit it thin. Which I do…a lot.

This will be a really fun experiment

WHY THOUGH?

When looking at the hard truths, there isn’t a set here that won’t work; they all have that performance baseline that helps a guy like me.

I wanted to take this summer to understand a recipe for building a great iron set for me as I go into my 50’s, I even considered combo-ingredients OEMS based on each iron. ie. take the best 5-iron, 6-iron etc. They are all the same spec, so I could pull that off.

Is that realistic? no. Is it interesting? yes.

Keep in mind that any good fitter can get you where you wanna go quite easily, I’m just a little nuts and doing this off the reservation.

From tour van failure to retail gold: The real story behind the Triple Diamond

The latest episode of Tour Validated was a personal one for me. I got to sit down with my dear friend Johnny Thompson, who is the current tour content manager at Callaway Golf. (Yes, my old gig.) Thompson is becoming known for his content, but on the Tour range, he’s still one of the most respected Tour fitters in golf. His wealth of knowledge and stories around working with the world’s best is unlimited.

We got to talking about Tour R&D — and the convo pivoted to Xander Schauffele. This is cool.

Let’s zero in on a specific part of that conversation that absolutely blew up my text messages after the episode aired: the real backstory of Schauffele’s driver struggles and how it forced Callaway to invent the Triple Diamond franchise.

For the gear junkies who think tour players just snap their fingers and magic happens, this is your ultimate reality check.

The initial struggle

When Schuaffele first came over to Callaway, everyone assumed it would be an overnight, plug-and-play fit. It wasn’t. In fact, that first year was an absolute grind behind the scenes.

The truck was trying to fit him into the existing retail structures, running through the standard Rogue and Flash heads. On paper, everything looked fine. If you looked at the launch monitor, the ball speed was there, the launch was there, and the spin was exactly where the computers wanted it.

But out on the golf course, Schauffele was fighting it. He couldn’t find his start and fall line, which is HUGE for him. If it’s proper, it represents that most of the other tiles on a TrackMan are sound. Fitters know there is more to it than that, but Tour players are typically feel and sight oriented so that part is a non-negotiable.

Said Thompson: “It stung, man. We’d come home from weeks and just know we weren’t there with him with the current driver we had.”

Schauffele is a hyper-precise feel player who relies on an incredibly specific visual relationship with the face at address. If the club doesn’t sit on the turf perfectly, his brain subconsciously fights it. It got to the point where they built him a custom 440cc head just to try to trick his eye, but the consistency still wasn’t there. Schauffele actually went back to his old gamer from a previous OEM late in the year just to find comfort.

The optical illusion on the face — it’s not all numbers

So what was the actual problem? Through months of gathering data and getting feedback from Schauffele and his dad, Stefan, the R&D team diagnosed a visual conflict in how traditional drivers were being shaped.

To make a driver look appealing to a massive cross-section of players, standard heads often feature a blend of different visual vectors:

The bottom sole of the toe is rolled slightly “shut” or “squared-off”
The actual face angle line remains square
The top line is peeled away to look slightly open

For a normal amateur, you don’t even notice it. But for a world-class ball striker looking down at address, it was an optical illusion. If Schauffele looked at the toe, it looked shut; if he looked at the top line, it looked open. He was getting conflicting messages before he even started his takeaway. If Schauffele likes the “open” look, Jon Rahm is the polar opposite, he wants it shut. That makes sense — Schauffele is a drawer of the golf ball primarily, and Rahmbo is a cutter.

The shift to linear design

Callaway went back to Carlsbad and spent eight months building a tour-only prototype designed specifically to fix Schauffele’s eye.

They threw out the old face-shaping parameters and made the club face completely linear. They aligned the bottom sole line, the middle face vector and the top line perfectly parallel. When you set it on the ground, it sat PERFECT or linear. No illusions. No tricks.

To track these ultra-linear, low-spin heads on the truck, they stamped them with three small diamonds.

Validation in Maui

The confirmation of that entire process came at the season-opening event in Maui. Xander had put the fresh Epic Flash Sub Zero Triple Diamond prototype in the bag for its competitive debut.

On Sunday, he shot a final-round 62 to come from behind and win the tournament.

As the reps (and the company) watched on, seeing a club that caused you months of work win in its very first week out is the ultimate validation. It proved that the R&D shift worked. High-speed players across the tour immediately started demanding the same linear shape, and Callaway added the Triple Diamond to the retail lineup the following year.

Callaway's Father's Day ad spot reminds us what makes golf special

Once again, the U.S. Open champion will be crowned on Father’s Day.

But golf’s connection with Father’s Day extends far beyond the national open, and Callaway’s newest Father’s Day ad spot focuses in on the moments that make our game so special.

The ad, which is part of Callaway’s “Nothing Beats This” campaign, launched during Saturday’s broadcast of the U.S. Open and will air again during Sunday’s final round. The campaign isn’t specifically tied to Callaway’s lines of golf balls or clubs, but rather showcases why people love golf, and Callaway saw Father’s Day as the perfect time to highlight that message.

“Father’s Day week, U.S. Open week, huge amount of eyeballs, biggest sales week of the year… It’s that moment where people are sitting watching it,” Callaway VP of Marketing Nick McInally told GOLF. “We are not using this to say come buy the new Elyte driver or new golf balls. As a brand that’s trying to be aspirational but accessible, it’s a ‘hey, we get this. We’re golfers too.'”

For many father’s and their families, Father’s Day usually involves playing golf or sitting and watching the U.S. Open, like McInally said he will do Sunday afternoon with his son.

So the new ad spot is a collection of moments featuring dads and their kids going through those experiences from teaching the game, hitting a great shot or just a sweet, memorable moment. What’s special for Callaway is that none of the families you see in the ad are actors. Everyone has some connection to Callaway, whether they are an employee, a professional staff member, a Callaway Next participant or from a Callaway-sponsored youth organization like First Tee.

The end of the spot actually features one of those moments when Callaway Senior Product Manager Austin Tudor and his son Henry are walking down a fairway into the sunset. Henry leans into hug Austin and says, “Thanks, Dad,” just loud enough for the microphones to hear.

“The moment was completely unscripted, but just works so well,” McInally said. “He meant it because he was saying, hey, listen, thank you for allowing me to be in this. And when we captured that moment, we’re like, ‘Okay, that has to be in it.'”

Min Woo Lee isn't afraid to use prototype clubs on the big stage | Bag Spy

In this installment, GOLF Associate Equipment Editor Jack Hirsh takes you inside Min Woo Lee’s bag as he gets set for the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

Min Woo Lee’s swing has gone through an overhaul during the past 18 months and his bag has evolved with it to meet the needs of one of the game’s fastest players.

That bag ends up showing us a couple of things.

First, it’s a willingness to try anything. Lee has three different Callaway prototypes in his bag, including his unreleased set of Callaway Apex MB irons. But second, it’s also nice to be prepared with options for whatever the course setup might present.

“It goes back to kind of just studying the person rather than studying the clubs,” his fitter, Callaway Tour Rep Kellen Watson, told GOLF. “It’s like, what does this guy need? What does he want to see? What window does it need to come out of? If he’s staring straight down the fairway, does it need to come just left? I think this one has really got him into a point where he can aim a little bit more straight than he was last year.”

Lee came on the Tour with a strong out-to-in swing path, but recently he’s worked to become more neutral, which has led to many positive changes in what Watson can do with his bag.

From a driver that somewhat counterintuitively helps him find more fairways to a bevy of utility wood options and a new putter with adjustable weighting, Lee’s setup is built to allow him to swing freely and attack pins.

Earlier in his PGA Tour career, Lee played the Callaway Chrome Tour X+ golf ball, a tour-only version of the Chrome Tour X designed to produce more spin.

That was to counter Lee’s unique delivery dynamics, which launch the ball low with little spin.

Over time, Lee has worked with his coach, Ritchie Smith, to create more neutral delivery conditions, which has brought his launch up, Watson said. As his launch became more efficient, he no longer needed the extra spin from the X+, so he moved to the standard Chrome Tour X.

“The golf-ball testing has really been a journey over the last couple years because it’s been associated with what they’ve done swing-wise,” Watson said. “He used to need the extra spin from Chrome Tour X+ because the launches were very low. Now it’s easier to say, ‘This is the ball.’ We’re good on spin numbers and everything else falls into place.”

Lee naturally cuts the ball with a pretty significant out-to-in club path. As he’s worked to neutralize his delivery with Smith, that has also neutralized his club path. That has helped him control a big right miss with lots of curve. But while the ball is still cutting, it’s starting more right as well, especially under pressure.

While it sounds counterintuitive, that’s exactly why Lee tried out Callaway’s Elyte Triple Diamond Tour Draw Head last year.

“We’re giving him the most draw-biased CG that you can find because it mitigates that right fall,” Watson said. “The ball needs to start left to curve right and hit his targets. What you’re trying to do essentially is make a fader of the ball start the ball left and curve it right. It’s about fighting the misses and mitigating the misses rather than saying, ‘This is a draw driver, so only drawers should use it.'”

Lee moved into the updated version of the concept, the still-to-be-released Quantum TD-TD driver this year, and found his start line moved even further left while retaining the same left-to-right curve.

Watson and Lee also switched from the OG Fujikura Ventus Blue to the new Ventus TR Blue with Velocore+. The stouter handle section allows Lee to be more aggressive through the ball and not worry about losing the ball more right.

As a result, Lee can aim more directly at the target.

“It’s gotten him to a point where he can aim a little straighter than he was last year,” Watson said. “His lines were getting more and more left just to try to get the start line left. Ritchie loves it too because he’s aiming straighter with every club. The body lines are much better than they used to be because he was missing more and more right.”

This season, Lee is up to 12th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and Total Driving while remaining 9th in distance at 319.7 yards, which would be a career high. His driving accuracy is just under 60 percent (59.73), which ranks 73rd on Tour. Both numbers would also be career highs.

As far as Lee hits the ball, a 3-wood is something he rarely needs. At his speed and length, he reaches some of the longest par-5s on Tour without one.

Ever since Callaway got into the mini driver category two years ago, Lee has been experimenting with one as a secondary tee option. Now it’s basically a week-in-week-out fixture of his bag.

Not only is the distance of a mini driver shorter when Lee needs to fit the ball into a tight hole or keep it short of a hazard, but it’s also more predictable because of the reduced rollout.

“Not only are you carrying it a certain number, but your overall distance is a lot more predictable too,” Watson said. “You’re launching something with more spin, it’s landing softer, and it’s easier to figure out where it’s going to finish. You’re trying to put it right in the middle of the fairway to hit your next shot with an iron.”

This spot used to be occupied by an 18˚ Callaway X Forged UT that Lee could reach 170+ mph ball speeds with. But this year, Lee added Callaway’s Apex UW to the bag and found he could hit most of the same shots as the UT, while adding much higher ball flights and more versatility from the rough.

Now, Lee has three different UW options of different lengths and lofts that he chooses based on conditions and course setup. Watson described it as fitting Lee for an “arsenal” of clubs that he can then build his bag from for the course he’s playing.

“It’s a lot harder to fit these guys for course conditions than it is my buddy at the club,” Watson said. “My buddy plays the same two courses. These guys might need something different every week. I’d rather have him travel with 17 or 18 clubs and then cut it down to 14 depending on the golf course.”

Lee has two 21˚ UWs. One is a half-inch longer and bent to 19˚, essentially serving as Lee’s 3-wood when he needs it, rolling out to 300 yards off the tee. The other is at 40.5″ and around 20˚ and is his primary option most weeks.

He then has a 23˚ UW bent to 21˚ that might get the call this week as it’s specifically built for major championship setups with long par-3s (like No. 2 at Shinnecock).

The X Forged UT has likely been retired, but Lee does have a new 20˚ Apex ’26 UT that he likes as much as the old one. However, it may only come into play when the Tour heads across the pond for the Scottish Open and Open Championship.

Lee was the first player to game Callaway‘s Apex MB ’26 Prototype blades last season, and they were designed with some of his feedback.

The shape and visual remain largely unchanged from his previous JDM (Japan Domestic Market) Apex MBs, but the major addition is new sole geometry and tri-sole shaping.

“That tri-sole design gets in and out of the ground really quickly and it plays into pretty much everybody’s favor,” Watson said. “Some of those skinny soles can get stuck if the pattern isn’t correct. This one doesn’t do that.”

As Lee has worked to get less steep in his delivery, the benefits of the tri-sole only made the sole more effective.

While Watson says the prototype MB has proven more forgiving than most players expected, Lee still moves into X Forged ’24 for his 4- and 5-iron. The X Forged flows seamlessly from the MB prototype with the same tri-sole design and similar high-toe shape.

Lee was given a fresh set of oil can irons (with the new JDM X Forged heads) this week, but they are for him to test during his off week.

Lee plays a Callaway Opus SP gap wedge, followed by an older-model Titleist Vokey sand and lob wedges.

He also uniquely switches from Nippon’s Modus 125 X shaft in all of his irons and first two wedges to the 120 S in his lob wedge. That signals that he’s rarely taking full swings with his lob wedge.

By switching to a slightly lighter and much softer shaft, he’s prioritizing feel on partial swings and chip shots with his lob wedge. The more active mid-section can also allow Lee to add more dynamic loft and get the ball up faster when he needs to.

The final prototype club in Lee’s bag is Odyssey’s yet-to-be-released TRTL S Prototype putter.

The Aussie was a blade player, using an Odyssey O-Works 1W with a Microhinge insert to win in Houston last year, but he then switched into a custom Jailbird S2S prototype last summer.

After a down rookie campaign in 2024, Lee’s putting stats rebounded last season. But Lee ranked 142nd in the category through his first two starts, and already was looking at alternatives with Odyssey Tour Rep Cody Hale that gave him more rotation in his stroke.

“The putter had started moving a little more down the line, so we wanted something that would allow the stroke to work more naturally,” Hale said.

Lee was the first player to game the TRTL prototype, and Hale said the combination of certain features and the slant neck worked well for his stroke.

“As we’d been working on this head, we knew it had high MOI, adjustable weighting and some unique alignment features,” he said. “We also talked about going to something with more toe hang. A slant neck gave us that, and that became the starting point.”

Like the driver, Lee switched at Pebble, where in a T2 finish, he was second in SG: Putting. He has rebounded to 60th on Tour in putting.

If you’ve been following along via my IG, the Fully Equipped Podcast or any other Fully Fit content, you would know by now that the overall equipment market is so competitive that it’s almost impossible to make a bad decision.

In any category.

Every company not only has “their best” but that “best” goes all the way through the bag. YES, there are some parts where the volume isn’t cranked up to a ten (some hybrids, a few iron sets, etc.), but overall it’s probably the most competitive year in recent memory.

However, for me, there was one piece of equipment that was substantially better than the rest: the Callaway Chrome Tour X golf ball.

Of everything I tested, put in play, loved, touted and evangelized, this ball has gotten the most smoke. Why? It was the only piece of equipment that, when introduced at a fitting, improved my performance numbers in a unique way. That’s not just me, either; see for yourself in this video with Charles Howell III. The results were laughable.

I ran a test for myself off camera in most of my fittings, where at the end I would swap in the Chrome Tour X, and almost like Thanos snapping his fingers, the atmosphere would shift. Ball speed UP 2-4MPH, launch down 1-2 degrees, spin retention was better, dispersion tightened and gapping all of a sudden organized.

Look, I’m 49 years old, a 2-handicap, and in a line of work where I don’t get blown away very often. This ball was the first time (in a long time) that a piece of equipment eliminated any need for more testing on anything else. In fittings, if a driver was close numbers-wise, I’d pop in a CTX at the end, and the numbers went from good to “My God.”

This was just one recent example, and honestly, it was like this EVERYWHERE I went. What’s even cooler is I can now start to look at iron sets that may be on the less forgiving side because CTX actually raised my ceiling and my floor at the same time. That just doesn’t happen. Is it good off the range? On the course? Well, I’ve played six rounds of golf this year, both in tournaments (yes, that’s the truth). All rounds were in very windy conditions on hard, fast greens, and not once did I make a bogey or worse because of a lack of control in the wind: No floaters, no knuckle balls, nothing.

Some may think I’m biased because of my employment history… not the case. The moment I stepped away from Callaway in 2025, I went right into their No. 1 competitor’s ball and had a good summer with it. The moment I put the new CTX back in the mix, I literally went from a 49-year-old trying for dear life to keep my ball speed in the low to mid-160s to now thinking that 170 MPH is literally at my fingertips.

Give this a test. If you don’t, you’re not doing this right.

It’s that simple.

Callaway's longest golf ball just got even faster

Callaway is upgrading its longest Tour-level golf ball.

Just over a year after launching it, Callaway is re-introducing the Chrome Tour Triple Diamond golf ball, the firmest and fastest golf ball in their lineup, with the new Tour Fast Mantle from their 2026 Chrome Tour Lineup.

“We’ve seen great success with this product when we introduced this golf ball in 2025, especially in regard to the fast ball speeds,” Callaway Global Golf Ball Director Jason Finley said in a press release. “And with the early success that we’ve had, particularly with our Tour Fast Mantle technology on the 2026 lineup of Chrome products, we wanted to bring that in line with the new golf Chrome Tour Triple Diamond.”

What’s actually new and why you should care

The key new feature of the 2026 Chrome Tour Triple Diamond golf balls is the Tour Fast Mantle, introduced in this year’s Chrome Tour lineup.

Callaway has been developing the new material for over four years to achieve a 16 percent higher modulus than the previous generation, resulting in a stiffer mantle layer, meaning higher speeds without an increase in spin. That means more distance through an optimized core/layer system for all of Callaway’s Chrome Tour golf balls.

Not increasing the spin is crucial for a ball like the Triple Diamond, which is designed to have a firmer feel and lower spin combined with the fastest speed of any of Callaway’s golf balls to produce the most distance.

“This ball is fast, and the Tour Fast Mantle just reinforces that it will continue to be one of the fastest golf balls in the market,” Callaway Senior Director of Golf Ball R&D Eric Loeper said. “I would put this golf ball up against anything else and it’s going to be as long or longer. It really comes down to that new material that enables us to do that and not increase spin rates.”

Moving forward, the Triple Diamond will now be released at the same time as the rest of the Chrome Tour family.

Callaway releases new Quantum Mini driver, Ti fairway wood

One of the PGA Tour’s hottest new mini drivers is coming to retail.

On Thursday, Callaway officially announced the Quantum Mini driver, along with the Quantum Ti fairway, bringing the third generation of the company’s mini driver to market, which has proven to be their most versatile based on PGA Tour usage.

The new mini driver borrows from Callaway’s recent fairway wood offerings with a step-sole design, allowing it to be more easily hit off the deck.

“The one thing that you constantly get feedback on is, ‘I can’t hit it off the ground,'” Callaway VP of product strategy Jacob Davidson told GOLF. “And so that was something that we felt like — if we could find a way to help the best players in the world or the average consumer at least be able to hit it off the ground in some capacity, it would just make the product better.”

Meanwhile, the Ti fairway adds left-to-right CG adjustability for the first time in a Callaway fairway wood.

“The benefit of Ti is the amount of discretionary weight that you have to move around,” Davidson said. “And the engineering challenge is like, where do you put it? You have all this tungsten in there, so a lot of time was spent on how do we strategically set this up in a place that delivers a spec package that performs.”

Both clubs launched on the PGA Tour at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and have seen a host of player conversions, including Callaway staffers Min Woo Lee and Max Greyserman, and non-staffers like Justin Rose. With several Quantum Minis in bags, Callaway had 10 mini drivers in play at the Masters, the most in the field.

What’s actually new with Quantum Mini and Quantum Ti — and why you should care

A step in the right direction

At 340 cc, the Quantum Mini, like its predecessors, is the largest mini driver in the marketplace. With that comes superior forgiveness off the tee but sacrifices performance from the deck.

Knowing that being able to hit a mini driver off the floor is crucial to players like Si Woo Kim, Callaway borrowed technology from its fairway woods in the step-sole design to help raise strike points on shots hit from the turf.

“Typically, when you try to get these drivers off the ground, you’re so low on the face that you can’t get any launch or spin,” Davidson said. “But the way the step sole works with the turf interaction, you’re able to move that impact location significantly higher on the face.”

High strike points mean lower spin rates off the turf, easier launch and longer distances.

Like the rest of the Quantum driver family, the Quantum Mini has the new multi-material Tri-Force face to boost speeds and aid in spin retention.

Optimizing ball flight

Both the new mini and the Ti fairway wood feature ball flight adjustability through Callaway’s Optifit 4 hosel adapter.

The new hosel was added to all fairway woods this year after just being used on hybrids in the last generation and allows for loft and lie to be adjusted independently. Not only does this allow the mini driver to continue using Callaway 3-wood shafts, but it also helps optimize turf interaction.

“You have more adjustability in lie, right? You can go up and down, flatten, upright,” Davidson said. “And when you get into the mini driver — it’s a shorter build length — so you want to have that adjustability. Especially for the people that are hitting it off the ground, anytime you’re interacting with the ground, lie angle is very important.”

Designers have also gone back to the configuration on the Paradym Ai-Smoke Mini driver of having front-to-back CG adjustability as opposed to having left-to-right CG adjustability on the Elyte Mini. They found most people will benefit more from being able to adjust launch and spin to maximize distance with a mini rather than shot shape.

Meanwhile, with the discretionary weight saved by the titanium construction of the Ti fairway, Callaway chose to give that club left-to-right CG adjustability.

The default position is the heavy weight in the heel to help players create a draw ball flight that most players prefer for a fairway wood.

What is it: A larger 340 cc mini driver featuring Callaway’s Tri-Force face for increased speed and speed retention, step-sole design for turf interaction and forward and aft CG adjustability.

Available lofts: 11.5˚(RH/LH), 13.5˚ (RH/LH)

Who it’s for: Players looking for a forgiving mini driver that can still be hit off the deck to replace a 3-wood or a secondary tee option to their driver.

Quantum Ti fairway wood

What is it: A mid-sized all-titanium construction fairway wood with the footprint of the Quantum Max fairway, but the shape of the Quantum Triple Diamond. Heel-toe weighting allows left-to-right ball flight optimization.

Available lofts [only for woods]: 15˚ (RH/LH), 18˚ (RH only)

Who it’s for: Players who want as long a 3-wood as possible to potentially be used as a secondary tee option or a club to reach longer par-5s in two.

My take: Keep making tee clubs more versatile

I’ve been skeptical of the road Callaway has taken over its initial mini driver releases, but I can say with confidence that the Quantum Mini is leaps and bounds ahead of the others for one simple reason: the sole.

The sole of a mini driver is so important if you’re going to be able to hit it off the turf, so to see technology aimed at helping you get the meat of the club on the ball is a great addition.

I previously thought Callaway mini drivers were too large, thus making them strictly tee clubs, but now they can have their cake and eat it too with the extra forgiveness of the size and the versatility of the sole.

With the Ti fairway wood, this is a club that could rival the Quantum Mini for many players’ bags. It’s basically a question of which look do you want, a more traditional fairway wood that will have a slight edge off the deck, or a mini driver that holds an edge off the tee.

The Ti fairway wood was super easy to launch for me, but it had a very pleasing flat trajectory without me having to do much adjusting of the cog. As someone who lives out on the toe, being able to put weight out there and straighten my ball flight was a huge advantage that just isn’t offered by many other fairway woods with this shape.

Either way you go, Quantum Mini and the Ti fairway wood are going to get you in the short stuff and are easy to hit from there too.

Price, Specs and Availability

Callaway’s new Qauntum Mini driver and Ti fairway wood are available for pre-order starting April 16. The Mini will arrive at retail locations on April 24, while the Ti Fairway shows up on April 29.

Both clubs will cost $549.99.

Personally, this is the coolest part of the launch for me. They did an amazing job with the putters, and switching the name from Jailbird to Freebird for the collection is just such a perfect nod. Available in a very nice red, white and blue finish with plenty of patriotic accents is the Ai-DUAL USA 250 Freebird Mini DB, Ai-DUAL USA 250 #7 S, Ai-DUAL USA 250 Freebird Cruiser and the Square 2 Square Ai-DUAL USA 250 Freebird. Each putter comes with a matching 1776 “We the People” themed headcover. Freebird Mini and the #7 will retail for $379.99. The Cruiser and the Square 2 Square will retail for $429.99. I think my favorite accent on these is the Jailbird models utilizing the red and white stripes as a nod to the American Flag.

Wedges

Along with the Quantum drivers and Odyssey putters, Callaway is also bringing some custom Opus SP wedges to the USA 250 collection. Available in 50º to 60º increments, each section contains a slightly different laser engraving. The gap wedge lofts go for a “We the People” script, stars on the sand wedge lofts, and a nice waving flag on the lob wedges. Each wedge is also paint filled with red, white, and blue paint. Possibly the coolest detail here is the inclusion of a True Temper Dynamic Gold S200 with a USA 250 themed shaft label along with the same Golf Pride Patriot Z-Grip we saw on the driver lineup. Each USA 250 Opus SP wedge will retail for $219.99.
