The quest for the perfect iron set is never really a straight line.

As mentioned in my opening analysis during Fully Fit, I’m getting older (49), my game is a mess due to lack of playing and practice and I’m just at that point where my eyes are looking for comfort and fun VS precision and responsiveness.

I’m that guy who wanted a Porsche 911 for years, and now, at 49, vibed-out minivans hold more appeal. Make sense?

But what’s the end game? Why can’t I just find one set of sticks?

Well, the answer is actually quite fun… I found a bunch of them; they all work, and I’ll explain how and why.

Set 1: Cobra 3DP Tour, my unicorns.

The journey started with a fascination for a genuine new idea: the Cobra 3DP Tour irons.

Cobra’s utilization of a 3D-printed lattice structure inside the cavity wasn’t just a gimmick; it completely altered how they distributed weight. On the coastal terrain, these irons were exceptionally stable. Total distance consistency was remarkable because the strike didn’t need to be dead-center to maintain ball speed. But while they served their purpose beautifully, this gig provides new gear to be tested and new fitters to learn from.

They still remain the gold standard of what I tested, so many good shots and a user experience to get excited about.

Next came a shift toward a more compact, tour-inspired shape with the PXG 0311 T Gen8. The Tour profile is arguably one of the cleanest shapes they’ve engineered—thin top line, minimal offset, and a short blade length that just looks right at address. The magic here is their updated weighting system that allows you to create nuanced “bias” in an iron head. This (like Cobra 3DP) is a new form of customization that really speaks to me.

I took them out to the Morris County Golf Club Member-Guest. I hit them great overall, but I ran into a persistent left miss on off-speed shots. Why? Because, against the advice of counsel, I overshot the heel weighting while trying to chase a specific shot shape and mitigate ANY right, which threw a heavy, long left miss into the setup.

Even with that left miss, two great things stood out from that week: first, the sheer level of customization you can achieve with their perimeter weights is unmatched; second, the technology actually works exactly how they say it does. Change the weights, change the flight—I just proved it a little too well.

Seeking a return to a true one-piece cavity back feel with a bit more structural footprint, the transition moved to Callaway and the X-Forged Max. The X-Forged line is a nod to classic Japanese forgings, featuring a pre-worn leading edge that prevents the club from digging too aggressively.

I LOVE THESE IRONS!

Going through this phase underscored how much a sole design impacts delivery. The feel of a pure, single-piece forging is hard to replicate with multi-material construction. Ball speed stayed incredibly tight relative to swing speed, and the spin characteristics were exactly what you want for holding firm greens out of the rough.

The flight was stable and predictable. But the pursuit of optimization never truly stops when you’re searching for that ultimate balance of speed and control. I also appreciate the fact that optically, although this is a player’s distance iron, they look like any tour cavity-back on the market. Compact shape, great lines, and a long iron to short iron progression for launch.

This brings us to the present workspace setup, where two options are going head-to-head. The Srixon ZXi combo approaches performance by blending a multi-piece forged face in the ZXi5 long irons (5-6) with a single-piece forging in the ZXi7 scoring irons (7-PW).

Its primary traits are massive ball speed and spin consistency driven by its i-FORGED and MainFrame face technologies. We all know how well these things feel and get through the ground in any condition, and to be fair, I played them for a while last year when I started with Golf.com. I loved them, actually, just hadn’t tried them with Nippon 120X, so here we are.

This is an ongoing experiment to see if this type of platform works best for me, like X-Forged Max the Srixon combo has that “it” factor of look and feel, and it doesn’t hurt that on Tour they still remain one of the alpha irons out there.

On the other side of the bay sits the project we’ve been dialing in, and it’s a completely different animal. This isn’t off-the-rack; it’s a highly planned blending of three distinct Ping platforms to build a progressive matrix. We started with the i540 in the 5-iron to give me that high-launch, high-ball-speed floor where my speed typically drops off. From there, it transitions into the i240 for the 6- and 7-irons, offering a perfect bridge of mid-iron forgiveness and stability, before moving into the pure, fully-forged Blueprint S for the scoring clubs (8-PW).

To make this mix work seamlessly, we bent the entire set to Power Spec lofts, creating a perfectly linear gapping progression: a 23.5° 5-iron, 28° 6-iron, 32° 7-iron, 36° 8-iron, 40° 9-iron and a 44° pitching wedge. Built 1-degree upright with Nippon Modus 120 X shafts at a D3 swingweight, the build feels incredibly unified. This set is built around problem-solving mis-hits.

On the TrackMan, this progressive matrix solves my north-to-south dispersion issue.

The Blueprint S short irons give me total control over the spin axis and launch angle when I want to flight a wedge down, while the i240 and i540 heads ensure that my long-iron ball speeds don’t bunch up and stay in a fun spot when I hit it thin. Which I do…a lot.

This will be a really fun experiment

WHY THOUGH?

When looking at the hard truths, there isn’t a set here that won’t work; they all have that performance baseline that helps a guy like me.

I wanted to take this summer to understand a recipe for building a great iron set for me as I go into my 50’s, I even considered combo-ingredients OEMS based on each iron. ie. take the best 5-iron, 6-iron etc. They are all the same spec, so I could pull that off.

Is that realistic? no. Is it interesting? yes.

Keep in mind that any good fitter can get you where you wanna go quite easily, I’m just a little nuts and doing this off the reservation.

When I walked into my PXG iron fitting, I wasn’t expecting to replace the irons in my bag. In fact, it was the first club fitting I’d ever gone into genuinely happy with my current set. But still, I was curious to see whether they could actually outperform the clubs I already trusted.

The fitting started with a question from GOLF’s Johnny Wunder that set the tone of the session:

“What’s the miss that scares you the most?”

For me, it’s the big slice that creeps into my game every now and then. Nothing rattles my confidence faster than watching my shot peel off to the right. As we talked through my tendencies, my fitter explained that the goal of the session wasn’t to chase the occasional perfect shot — it was to make my misses look more like my good shots, both in distance and dispersion.

We started with PXG’s 0311T GEN8 irons in a configuration close to my current setup, pairing the head with a slightly heavier shaft and neutral weighting. It only took a few swings to notice a difference. Right off the bat, my ball speeds jumped, my carry distance increased, my launch window came down and I still had plenty of stopping power into the green.

The added distance was impressive, but the forgiveness was what really stood out. Shots struck low on the face maintained more ball speed than I expected, flew nearly their full distance, and stayed on line enough to keep me within scoring distance.

From there, we began dialing in the weighting. By adding more mass to the heel, we introduced a slight draw bias that offset my tendency to leave the face open. These weren’t dramatic changes, but they made a noticeable difference. I watched as my dispersion tightened, my start lines became more consistent and my misses finished in better spots.

We also compared the 0311T GEN8 against PXG’s Players option (0311P GEN8). At address, the two looked remarkably similar, with the Players iron offering just a touch more offset. Both performed well, but the T consistently produced a tighter dispersion and more predictable start lines, making it the clear winner.

By the end of the session, we landed on a blended set: 0311T GEN8 irons from 6-iron through pitching wedge, a 0311P GEN8 5-iron, lofts bent one degree stronger, SteelFiber 95 shafts, and a heel-biased weight setup built specifically for my swing.

When I walked into the fitting, I wondered if PXG could outperform a set of irons I already loved, and now I had my answer.

The biggest difference wasn’t the extra ball speed or even the added length — it was the confidence this set of irons gave me. My good swings were rewarded, but more importantly, my mishits were no longer at risk of wrecking my rounds.

For decades, the math at the top of the bag was written in stone: driver, 15-degree 3-wood, 5-wood. You didn’t question it. But over the past few seasons, a quiet revolution has completely rewritten tour gear philosophy. We’ve collectively woken up to the fact that forcing a tiny, shallow-faced 3-wood to pull double duty—as both a 270-yard missile off tight turf and a bulletproof fairway finder off the tee—is a statistical trap. The game’s best minds have stopped chasing theoretical versatility and started building specialized tools for distinct jobs.

The old paradigm didn’t work because the physics didn’t work. The margin for error on a traditional fairway-wood face is just too thin for the modern, high-speed game. With statistics being such a HUGE part of the game these days, the old thinking has proven to be a risk.

Then you look at a guy like Jake Knapp.

Knapp possesses one of the most effortless, elite speed signatures in pro golf—cruising past 118 mph clubhead speed with a fairway wood in his hands without even blinking. He is the poster child for the new era of top-of-bag architecture, completely abandoning traditional distance-based gapping in favor of absolute functional separation. Instead of a standard 3-wood, his bag is built around PXG’s latest Lightning platform and a precisely weighted mini-driver.

I recently stood on the range at Scottsdale National with Knapp as he went through a full testing session. Watching how he shifts responsibilities between these head shapes proves that the traditional gapping chart is officially dead. For players with high speed, or for anyone who struggles with consistency off the turf, the choice of fairway-wood sole architecture is what matters most. Keep in mind, this is PLAYER SPECIFIC. There isn’t a one-solution-works-for-all answer.

Overcoming the steeper delivery trap

To understand why specific fairway profiles work so beautifully for Knapp, you have to look closely at how he impacts the golf ball. Because of his speed and natural athletic tendencies, he can get a bit steep through the hitting zone. On a standard, shallow-faced 3-wood, that steep delivery is a recipe for disaster.

“For me, more consistency off the tee box was everything,” Knapp explained as we monitored his ball flights. “Since I’m somebody who’s a little bit steeper, traditional 3-woods, I would always hit them high in the face. Especially if I went to go hit one lower, I’d always hit them super low-spin and knuckly. I was never really able to find a 3-wood that I absolutely loved or could do all the things I wanted to do.”

Traditional fairway woods leave very little room to protect against vertical face misses. When you strike a ball slightly high or low on a standard face, the spin collapses into a diving, low-spin knuckle ball OR (which isn’t the worst thing) a low face, spinny floater.

Knapp’s solution is a complete separation of responsibilities at the top of the bag. While he retains an adjustable, larger-profile mini-driver strictly for selective, specialized tee shots on tight driving holes, he shifts his turf-interaction needs to a high-lofted 5-wood.

On tour, long par-5 approach shots require a ball to land soft from 240 to 265 yards out. A dedicated, high-lofted fairway wood provides the necessary launch to drop the ball out of the sky with stopping power, while preventing the severe offline misses when your swing path wanders.

For most elite players, there IS a driver swing and a rest of the bag swing. Some more extreme than others, but the days of “sweeping” a fairway wood have been traded for a steeper, “hit it like a 5-iron” approach. Modern fairway wood design and ball technology have shifted that over the years.

For Knapp, his 13-degree mini-driver—which he calls “my baby”—offers an immediate solution to his steep delivery off the tee. A modern mini-driver bridges the massive structural gap between a standard 175cc fairway wood and a 460cc driver, living comfortably around the 300cc mark to provide a much deeper vertical face profile and a massively increased footprint.

“The difference for me is like, I can tee this thing a little bit higher,” Knapp noted. “Like 17 last week, it’s like a little downwind, and I feel like I can tee it higher and hit it like a driver and it comes out nice. Whereas if I did that with a 3-wood, it’s like if I’m going to hit it hard, that’s a small area to get the numbers that I want. So I feel like the versatility of it is just so much greater than a 3-wood.”

During our testing session, Knapp caught one slightly off the heel—a miss that would typically send a traditional 3-wood rocketing off-line with high spin. The mini-driver absorbed the blow effortlessly: ball speed dropped only 2 mph, and he lost a mere five yards of carry, keeping the ball dead on his target line.

“Having a little bit bigger head just gives you a little bigger area to hit it and I feel like for me it just gives me that little bit more forgiveness, which why wouldn’t you want that?” Knapp said. “With a 3-wood, I would have gained 1,000 or 1,500 spin and it just goes a mile in the air, way more right, and ball speed’s way down.”

While the mini-driver handles the tee box, evaluating Knapp’s options for long approach shots off the grass led us right into the new PXG Lightning platform. The data off the turf backed up the visual confidence. Even when catching a strike slightly low on the face, the platform’s stability kept his launch and spin numbers incredibly tight.

“That’s nice,” Knapp said after tracking a few shots. “I mean, that’s what you want out of a club like this. Having something that you can hit in different places in the face and have it come out through similar windows.”

We then tested his situational shot—the soft, spinny, 240-yard cut that players use to hold greens on long par-fives. The Lightning responded perfectly, holding its spin up at 4,724 rpm and carrying 240 yards exactly on line. “Well, that was nice,” Knapp remarked. “I mean, that’s kind of exactly what that shot should do. To me, it feels like I’m hitting like an 80-yard wedge shot. It feels like I’m — it’s very under control.”

Time to audition a high-loft fairway?

If you are an amateur golfer struggling to keep your driver on the planet, or if you regularly find yourself pulling a traditional 3-wood on a tight par-4 only to wipe it into the right trees, you need to look at the math.

A modern fairway-wood platform combined with a specialized tee option allows your natural angle of attack to find the center of the face, delivering the exact launch and spin window you need to manage long shots. If an elite professional with world-class ball-striking capability is willing to sacrifice traditional bag configurations for the sake of tightening his dispersion windows and raising his launch height, it’s a sign that you should probably stop fighting your 3-wood and look into a broader, higher-lofted footprint.

Welcome to Fully Equipped’s weekly Tour equipment report. Every Friday of PGA Tour weeks (plus other times, if news warrants), GOLF equipment editor Jack Hirsh runs you through some of the biggest news surrounding golf clubs on Tour, including changes, tweaks and launches.

After one round, Aronimink is proving more difficult off the tee than originally anticipated, and one of the early leaders is navigating that challenge with golf’s rarest club.

Yes, Aldrich Potgieter is gaming a 1-iron this week, and it’s helped him contend at the PGA Championship (tied for the lead after the first round and the solo leader at the time of this writing on Friday).

Off-the-tee play wasn’t much of a story in the lead-up at Aronimink, which is hosting a PGA for the first time in 64 years. The Donald Ross gem measures just 7,394 yards, short by modern major championship standards, and players contemplated bomb-and-gouge strategies for the layout.

“Strategy off the tee is pretty nonexistent,” Rory McIlroy said in his pre-tournament press conference. “It’s basically bash driver down there and then figure it out from there. … When these traditional golf courses take a lot of trees out, it makes strategy not as much of a concern off the tee.”

That comment came back to bite McIlroy, as he hit just 5 of 14 fairways and lost nearly a half shot to the field off the tee in an opening-round 74. Turns out the wild undulations and firm conditions of Aronimink’s fairways made them difficult to hold. Missing the fairway also proved unexpectedly penal, as the average proximity difference between the fairway and not on Thursday morning was nearly six feet worse than the average PGA Tour host course, according to Justin Ray.

While many players opted to keep their typical top-of-bag setups, Potgieter took the interesting approach of adding a 1-iron in addition to his regular PXG 2-iron. The slightly longer build checked in at just over 15 degrees of loft, which gave the club a touch of right bias.

Now, like many of the 1-irons you see on the PGA Tour from time to time, this isn’t your grandfather’s 1-iron. This is a hollow-bodied club with a graphite shaft designed to get the ball in the air. I wouldn’t advise anyone to hold Potgieter’s 1-iron (which he referred to as a 3-wood in a press conference) up during a lightning storm.

The club is rare by PGA Tour standards and if ever seen, it’s usually during the Open Championship or Scottish Open.

But Potgeiter’s 1-iron has some unique abilities even among other butter knives. As PXG’s Justin Shepherd told GOLF, the new Gen 8 driving iron’s weight adjustability allowed Potgieter to add the club in place of his fairway wood because they could straighten out his ball flight more easily.

“Playing with the weight and lie angle, as I went a little more upright … he actually was losing some ball speed, so he obviously wasn’t hitting it as well,” Shepherd said. “We moved back to the lie angle fit, then we could work on the ball flight without changing the two things.”

Potgieter’s 1-iron features a 12g weight in the heel and a 7g weight in the toe to help him turn it over. His 2-iron is more neutral.

With the 1-iron, which is 5/8 of an inch longer than the 2-iron with the same Nippon Modus GOST shaft, Potgieter carries the ball only a few yards farther than the 2-iron, but its runs out nearly 30 yards farther while reaching 170-172 mph ball speeds.

While Potgieter hit driver off the tee 11 times on Thursday, his driving irons came in handy on three tee shots and his approach to the par-5 9th. It all added up to a share of the first-round lead.

Flatstick swaps

One thing that has rung true about the challenge of Aronimink has been the difficulty of its signature Donald Ross domed greens. Was that the reason a number of players chose to make putter changes when tweaks during major weeks are usually more subtle?

The most notable move was Brooks Koepka, who moved into a new TaylorMade 2026 Spider Tour V from his previous 2025 Spider Tour X. Koepka reportedly broke his previous putter at the One Flight Myrtle Beach Classic last week, necessitating the change. He spent several hours working through various mallet putters on Monday before settling on the new Spider Tour V.

We still don’t know much on the new Spider Tour V, which appears to have been redesigned from the previous version that’s in Shane Lowry’s bag. The previous Spider Tour V was the most forward CG mallet in the TaylorMade lineup, making it feel like a blade.

Koepka’s new Tour V appears more compact and the weight ports are forward in the head, which seems to indicate a similar goal. Koepka is likely looking to find something that feels like his previous Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Teryllium putters.

But more surprising was that Alex Fitzpatrick, fresh off a Cinderella three-week run after winning the Zurich Classic team event, swapped putters.

The young Fitzpatrick went from his silver Odyssey Ai-ONE No. 7 S to a Navy Ai-ONE No. 7 CH.

While the change from silver to navy is interesting, it turns out the change from a slant neck to a crank hosel is the key switch.

Odyssey reps Harry Shih and Cody Hale handled the change because Fitzpatrick, a gear-free agent, said he felt like he was leaving the face open at impact. In his first two events as a PGA Tour member, Fitzpatrick lost nearly a half-shot per round on the greens.

“Just gave him more face awareness,” Shih told GOLF. “He felt like the face was hanging open so we went to the crank so he could square the face up easier. Quintic data confirmed it.”

Hale added that the Crank Hosel matched his stroke rotation better.

“We also went 1 degree more upright to better match the shaft plane to his forearms, which he and his putting coach Andy Paisley like to see in his arm structure,” Hale said.

Sahith Theegala also went back to his Anser 2 gamer after a one-week trial with an Ally Blue H mallet.

And continuing a trend of what might become the PGA Tour’s next hot putter, Tom Hoge added a new Phantom 9.5R, the same model putter Cameron Young uses and Justin Thomas recently added.

Spieth goes longer; Fowler goes shorter

Thursday was a bit of a trip back in time for Jordan Spieth as he chases the career Grand Slam, but it was the driver that was dialed for Spieth, unlike how it was 10 years ago.

Spieth gained 1.93 strokes off the tee on the field in Round 1, ranked second in the field. He missed just two fairways.

Turns out he made a tweak to his GTS2 driver last week after putting it in play at Doral, going to a longer, 46″ Fujikura Ventus Black shaft.

Thanks to the increased stability of the GTS2 head he found he was able to go longer and down in loft (from 10 to 9) to get more speed. Spieth also has his GTS2 front weighted with 9g in the front and 3g in the back to get even more speed.

He gained .663 strokes a round off the tee at the Cadillac but then picked up more than a stroke a day at the Truist with the longer build. Since adding the GTS2, he’s gone from 113th in SG: Off the Tee to 77th in just two weeks.

But on the flip side, Rickie Fowler shortened his driver this week.

After using a 45″ driver for the last few weeks, Fowler is back again using a shorter build, but this time at 43.25″, almost certainly the shortest driver on the PGA Tour. In fact, it’s the same length as his mini driver.

Fowler is having one of his most accurate seasons on the PGA Tour in terms of driving accuracy and has used a 44.125″ driver for much of the season. He opened with an even-par 70 on Thursday.

Golf Pride again dominates grip count

As is typical, the overwhelming No. 1 grip at the PGA Championship was Golf Pride.

All but 11 of the 156 players in the field at Aronimink played Golf Pride grips this week, continuing the most dominant run in golf equipment.

If you search the golf forums online for all of 10 seconds, you’ll see some shaft arguments centered around the idea of playing something like a Fujikura Ventus Black or a Project X Titan.

These super-stout, low-launch, low-spin shafts are all the rage in the forums “because that’s what the pros play”. Usually, those names include guys like Rory McIlroy, Gary Woodland, Aldrich Potgieter and other high-speed players on the PGA Tour.

But we’ve got a new name to add to that list: Auston Kim of the LPGA Tour.

It’s pretty rare to see a shaft like Fujikura Ventus Black out on the LPGA Tour. In general, the LPGA doesn’t have as much aggression as the PGA Tour does, and even the players who are a bit more aggressive will typically opt for something that still provides them with a bit more help launching the ball. Something like a Fujikura Ventus Red profile or the popular Mitsubishi Diamana WB with its softer handle and mid-soft tip would be better driver shaft profiles for these types of swings.

But Kim isn’t anywhere near the “standard” female profile. She’s currently ranked fourth on the LPGA in driving distance, and she has a swing that more closely mimics something like Cam Young; very wide, very long, and adds a small pause at the top of the swing before unleashing in transition.

Auston goes for a Fujikura Ventus Black Velocore+ 5-S that’s tipped an inch. I asked PXG LPGA Tour Manager Scotty Kim how many times he tips a driver shaft an inch out on the LPGA.

He simply replied, “Not often.”

He also mentioned, “Auston could probably actually play something a little bit stiffer than this if she wanted, but tipping the stiff flex gives her a good blend of giving her the feel she wants with the performance she needs.” Auston simply added, “I’m good” with a laugh.

Auston combines her Ventus Velo+ Black with a PXG Lightning Tour, the lowest spinning head in the new Lightning lineup. The combination of a shaft keeping up with her aggression and the speed and spin profile of the Lightning Tour provides her with a very stable package that helps her hit the signature cut shot that she wants to see off the tee.

And she’s got all the speed she needs to earn that No. 4 rank in driving distance on the LPGA Tour. Auston sits in the low 160s for ball speed, similar to me, if that’s any indication of her greatness, and she plays with a little bit more spin, too. I’m a big advocate for playing with a little bit more spin, and with such a consistent cut shot, she’s utilizing the stability and speed of the Lightning Tour in every way she can.

A good reminder that just because something says what it might be on paper doesn’t mean that in practice it’s what that gear is going to do. As an industry, we frequently get caught up trying to bucket equipment into speed and spin buckets. In Auston’s case, it was about consistency and deviation from shot to shot. Something that Johnny Wunder and I both noticed during our own testing of the PXG Lightning Tour back in October.

Other ‘stiff profile’ shafts on the LPGA

Another surprising option on the LPGA Tour getting a ton of use is the Diamana WB. Compared to the Ventus Black, it’s a bit of a softer profile, but it’s still created as the low-launch, low-spin part for the slightly stronger player. Something that’s been in the hands of guys on the PGA Tour like Xander Schauffele, Viktor Hovland, and Justin Rose.

You might guess a profile like the Diamana BB would be a more popular part for the women’s game, but with athletes of all genders getting stronger and faster, the need for profiles to keep up with the more athletic fields is more apparent.

For those of you reading at home, this leads into a discussion about how important it is to find the right profile golf shaft for your game, and then match the weight and flex of that profile to your swing’s needs.

Making sure you’re in a profile that activates at the right time in your swing is critical. Weight and flex are then there to make sure that you’re squeezing every bit of performance out of it that you can.

In Auston Kim’s case, they decided to stick with a lighter-weight, stiff flex shaft that they tipped one inch. This tipping stabilized the tip a tad while also making the handle a bit softer, which is very helpful for a wider, more aggressive swing that stays very connected. Again, think Auston, Rory, Cam Young, or Xander.

They don’t yank down on the golf shaft in transition; they keep it wide and long with their wrists relatively stable, and they create separation until impact.

PXG staffer Auston Kim, who averages 290 yards per drive, is one of the LPGA’s longest hitters. And her power dictates a special fit. Recently, I had a chance to get some range time with Kim and PXG LPGA tour manager Scotty Kim and got a look into their process when it comes to getting clubs in her bag.

Here’s what I learned.

The bottom of the bag

Auston Kim started the bag with a 58-degree lob wedge, choosing to play PXG’s 3x Forged Sugar Daddy III wedges and opting for a lower bounce C-Grind offering in the lobber. She said she’s never used a 60-degree wedge because she prefers to chip with the 58 degree. At one point, she played just 52- and 56-degree wedges until a round with Hollis Stacey at a junior tournament.

“She looked at my wedges,” Kim said, “and said, ‘What are you doing?’ So she told me to go 50, 54, 58 and I’ve just stuck with it.” Wise advice.

She continued the wedge set with a 54- and 50-degree S-Grind, also in the Sugar Daddy III wedges. I thought it was interesting that she chose the lower-bounce C-grind in the lobber, but Scotty Kim gave some insight.

“You know I think for her, with the shots that Auston hits around the green, the C-Grind provides some versatility for her,” he said. “Being able to open it up and still have the right bounce to get through the turf and not get stuck.”

Irons

Auston Kim had the PXG 0317ST irons, which are easily some of the nicest irons that PXG has ever made. It’s an iron that has stood the test of time over the years, and hasn’t been replaced yet by PXG, but we hear there may be something new coming soon. The 0317ST heads are what I would consider a “player’s blade.” It’s a narrow-sole option that’s meant to launch a little bit lower and spin a bit more while providing optimal control for the player.

Since Kim is a player who hits a cut shot and works the ball with plenty of spin, something like the ST provides her the feel, feedback and launch that she wants to feel in control of the ball. “I’m a stock cutter — I have to see the ball work left to right.” she said. She also talked about a recent iron switch that happened purely because Accra no longer makes her old Accra Tour 90 shafts. She’s now in the Accra TZi 95 iron shafts — it’s a fantastic graphite offering for stronger players looking for more of a ProjectX type of feel.

Long game

Kim really shines once you put some metal woods in her hands, and it starts with the hybrid, the hero of our story here. PXG has always made a really good hybrid. Even through a couple years of some iffy metal woods, the hybrids were always a good standout in the lineup. Kim, however, isn’t exactly the normal hybrid candidate. Hybrids are extremely popular on the LPGA, but a lot of that comes out of a need for speed and launch, not something that Kim concerns herself with. For her, it’s more about confidence.

“Personally, I think that I struggle with hitting the ball high sometimes,” she said. “I know I can get it up there, but the 4-iron just doesn’t look good to me. I’ve tried it a bunch before and I just — I believe that a hybrid has more versatility. I just like the look of this better.”

We had Kim hit a couple fun shots with her PXG Lightning 4-hybrid, and she hit the nail on the head when she talked about how versatile the club is. Hitting it through all windows is stress-free for Kim, and it gives her the confidence behind the ball that she needs to perform on course. With ball speeds reaching 143 mph, she gets plenty of distance out of the club as well. With her stock shot getting to about 80 feet in the air, I challenged her to hit the ball up to 100 feet and then hit it as low as possible. She hit one to 100.9 feet in the air and hit a low stinger to 21.4 feet. Versatility? Check.

She then followed up the Lightning 4-hybrid with a Lightning Tour 5W and Lighting Tour 3W before jumping to her Lighting Tour driver.

The big stick

Auston Kim and Scotty Kim worked together last fall when the new Lightning product came out and ended up fitting her into a Lightning Tour 9-degree Driver in the PXG FLAT setting with a Fujikura Ventus Velocore+ Black 5-S. Auston Kim works with plenty of spin, so using their Lightning Tour model helps to control her misses a bit better and makes sure that she’s not over-spinning her stock shot. The Ventus Velocore+ Black shaft helps keep up with her aggressive transition and helps stabilize the head through impact. It’s a setup she has a lot of trust in and has plenty of speed. Ranked fourth in driving distance on the LPGA doesn’t come easy, but clearly Scotty Kim has helped her build up a workhorse here.

“I already liked Black Ops a lot, and when I first tried the Lightning Tour that was — I mean I saw an immediate jump in ball speed and carry so it was a no-brainer,” Auston Kim said.

PXG’s new wedges won’t just help you stick the ball close to the hole, but also stick softly on the face.

The company announced its new Stick’em Forged wedge line Thursday, each precision-crafted from three-times forged 8620 soft carbon steel.

“The short game is where players either gain confidence or lose it,” PXG senior director of engineering Mike Nicolette said in a release. “With Stick’em Forged Wedges, the goal was to give golfers a wedge that performs predictably shot after shot. The head stays stable when you open the face, the grooves generate reliable spin, and the forged construction delivers the soft feedback players rely on to judge distance and touch around the green. When a wedge reacts exactly the way a player expects, it frees them up to be more aggressive and creative.”

PXG’s three-times forging process helps to align the metal’s grain structure at a molecular level. That’s how the company is able to create a super soft feel while retaining a crisp sound at impact.

Center of Gravity is also a focus of the design, as a high-toe shape helps to raise the CG and align it for open-face shots. That’s going to lead to lower launch angles and more spin, especially on open-face shots where spin is crucial.

The wedges also feature PXG’s high-performance groove geometry to maximize friction at impact to produce more consistent spin. The wider grooves help to grip the ball better and channel more water and debris away from the face.

The Stick’em Forged wedges will be offered in lofts ranging from 50˚ to 60˚ with the 54˚ to 60˚ lofts offered in either the wider, full-soled BP-grind or the tapered-sole S-Grind for more versatile performance.

Each wedge will cost $199 in chrome, while the Xtreme Dark finish costs $219.

In a short span of time, PXG has put together one of the most robust lineups of low-torque putters and now they’re adding a missing option.

PXG’s new Hot Rod ZT marks the company’s first low-torque option with a center-shaft hosel. Previously, all of the company’s “zero-torque” putters featured an S-hosel, which places the shaft over the CG axis, but then curves the hosel back to the heel.

“Every detail of Hot Rod ZT was shaped around confidence, both visually and through impact,” PXG design engineer Matt Andrews said in a press release. “From the way the mallet frames the ball to the sound and feel off the face, we focused on creating a putter that looks stable, feels stable, and performs exactly the way players expect when it matters most.”

What’s actually new with PXG Hot Rod ZT — and why you should care

The new Hot Rod ZT is now PXG’s largest and highest MOI ZT option.

The head is milled from 6061 aluminum, and the lighter-weight material allows mass to be distributed precisely within the head for maximum MOI.

Four interchangeable weights allow the weight to be further pushed toward the perimeter, as well as concealed high-density tungsten.

The face of the putter features PXG’s proprietary Pyramid Milled Face Pattern, which has a diamond-shaped pattern with a pointed tip to reduce actual contact area with the ball and soften the feel but still retain the feedback players are used to from a milled face.

The newest technology for PXG is the center-shafted design that goes straight through the head’s center of gravity to create the low-torque effect. Like all other PXG ZT putters, this putter will balance toe up. It also features three degrees of integrated shaft lean to place the hands back in front of the face, an optimal position.

My take: PXG is all in on low-torque

The new Hot Rod ZT marks PXG’s fifth low-torque shape option in their ZT putter family, building out one of the more comprehensive low-torque lineups on the market.

While PXG has released traditional putters since their first low-torque putter, the Allan, which was released in late 2024, it seems obvious this is where the focus of their putter design is going.

What’s really interesting is that this is the first time they have gone with a center-shafted option, instead going for their S-hosel on their previous releases.

I think what that tells us is that center-shafted options aren’t as taboo as they were when the low-torque trend started. Golfers are willing to try center-shafted models if they see the benefits and PXG is betting that golfers will see those benefits with their ZT putters.

The putter is available to be customized for length and lie, while the loft is fixed at 6˚ and 3˚ of integrated forward press. The stock headweight is 375g, while the minimum is 345g and max is 415g.

If this gear-free agent season has seemed quiet, you haven’t been paying attention to PXG.

The company made the only major signing of the new year when it announced that PGA Tour rookie Marco Penge joined its Tour staff last week. Now, PXG has added another big acquisition in the form of reigning PGA Tour rookie of the year Aldrich Potgieter. He was previously with Titleist.

“Last season showed me what it takes to compete out here,” Potgieter said in a press release. “I’m focused on getting better every week, and PXG gives me the tools and support to do that. The equipment performs, the process is straightforward, and that’s exactly what I’m looking for.”

Potgieter led the PGA Tour in driving distance last season at 325 yards a tee shot, which means PXG will now have two of the longest young stars on the PGA Tour on staff. Penge led the DP World Tour in Strokes Gained: Off-The-Tee and averaged 319 yards.

PXG also now has the last two winners of the PGA Tour ROTY award, with Potgieter joining 2024 winner Eric Cole. That doesn’t include Penge, who is the leading favorite to win the award this year.

“Aldrich didn’t just have a good rookie year – he set a standard,” PXG Founder and CEO Bob Parsons said. “He’s disciplined, powerful, and knows what he wants out of his equipment. That clarity and competitiveness make him a great fit for PXG as he takes the next step in his career.”

This is probably the final major equipment signing ahead of the 2026 season. It has been quiet, but PXG has been a big winner. The company is making a big bet on young talent, and it potentially could have the last three winners of the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award on its staff.
