Finally, Cameron Young’s wait is over as he rolled over the field to win the Wyndham Championship for his first PGA Tour victory.
A huge key for Young getting over the hump was a switch to a new Titleist Pro V1x golf ball this week.
At a recent session at Titleist’s Manchester Lane testing facility, Young was working with Titleist’s Director of Tour Research & Validation, Fordie Pitts, on a new CPO (Custom Performance Option) golf ball that would eventually become what Young won this week. Titleist has several CPO options available to Tour players, like the Pro V1 Left Dot Young previously played, and the Pro V1x+ that Aldrich Potgieter won with earlier this season.
Young first saw the final version of the prototype this week at the Wyndham.
“We weren’t sure if he was going to test it this week, but as he was warming up, he asked to hit a couple on the range,” Pitts said. “He was then curious to see some shots out on the course.
“Performance-wise, he was hitting tight draws everywhere. His misses were staying more in play. He hit some, what he would call ‘11 o’clock shots,’ where again he’s taking a little something off it. He had great control there.”
Young was dialed with his putter this week, seemingly making everything, including five birdies in a row near the start of Sunday’s final round at Sedgefield Country Club.
That club has been an issue for Young over the past two seasons, when he ranked outside the top 140 in Strokes Gained: Putting, but this year, he entered the final week of the regular season in 10th. That coincides with finding a new Scotty Cameron Phantom 9.5R Tour Prototype putter this season, which seems to have helped him get over the hump.
The Phantom 9 is one of the highest MOI mallets in the Scotty Cameron matrix, and Young’s has a fairly clean top with a single, full-length sight line. The “.5” designation indicates a short slant neck to give the putter more toe flow than a single-bend shaft and the “R” denotes a more rounded shape than the standard Phantom 9.5.
Young was also hitting booming drives with his Titleist GT2 driver. He entered the week just 70th in SG: Off the Tee, despite his prodigious length. This week, he was second in strokes gained, second in distance and top 30 in accuracy on his way to a huge victory.
Going more under the radar, Young also made a sneaky switch this week to the Golf Pride MCC Align Max. Young becomes the second player to win with the new grip and the second to win in his first week of the change. Young had previously played the Tour Velvet Cord or Tour Velvet Align models, so the MCC Align Max is like a mix of both styles, but with the larger ridge of the new Align Max.
