For years, launch monitors have had a reputation as tools that create robotic, overly technical players. Rory McIlroy sees it differently.
Ahead of The Open Championship, McIlroy pushed back on the idea that golfers who rely heavily on launch monitors are somehow at a disadvantage in firm, unpredictable conditions. While he acknowledged that some can become too consumed by shot data, he believes that technology is valuable because it’s designed to help develop feel—not replace it.
“If you see a certain number on TrackMan, it gives you a feeling of what you need to do,” McIlroy said in Tuesday’s press conference.
In other words, the data is simply a reference point. The goal is to connect those numbers to a specific feel in your swing. Once that relationship is established, you no longer have to chase the numbers. You rely on the feel you’ve developed to consistently reproduce them.
And that’s exactly why McIlroy leans on TrackMan in season. He explains that during tournament weeks, he isn’t trying to rebuild his swing or chase perfect positions. Instead, he uses the launch monitor to identify subtle changes in his swing before they become bigger problems.
As McIlroy explained in Tuesday’s press conference, he uses the data to pinpoint what’s happening in his swing. If his path drifts too far right, he tries to swing more left. If his clubface starts closing too much, he focuses on holding it square through impact. Yes, the launch monitor tells him what is happening, but it’s his experience and feel that determine how to fix it.
“To me, I actually feel like it’s a great tool to use when your swing gets off a bit and you can sort of train your feels back into where they need to be,” he said.
Rather than making McIlroy more mechanical, launch monitors reinforce the athletic instincts he’s spent years developing. They provide immediate feedback, allowing him to make adjustments on the fly instead of guessing what caused a miss.
For one of the best players in the world, it seems technology is sharpening, rather than replacing, the artistry that has defined his career.
