CROMWELL, Conn. — It’s common on the PGA Tour for players to carry multiple lob wedges with different sole grinds and switch between them based on the conditions or type of grass they’re playing each week.

Scottie Scheffler has used two different types of lob wedges in recent years, but he doesn’t change them the same way. And if you know anything about Scheffler and his golf clubs, that’s pretty par for the course.

Earlier this year at the WM Phoenix Open, Scheffler made a switch from a Titleist Vokey SM10 .06K-Grind lob wedge, a wide-sole wedge that’s become very popular on the PGA Tour in the last few seasons, to the narrow sole T-Grind, the top Vokey grind on the PGA Tour.

“Sticking with the narrow one for now,” Scheffler said Wednesday at the Travelers Championship. “We’ll see. If I get an inkling to change it, I will. But once it gets in the bag, it’s typically tough for me to take a club out.”

Both are low-bounce grind options but get there in different ways. The .06K’s (to be distinguished from the higher-bounce .12K) wide and flatter sole makes it much more forgiving on tight lies, slightly softer conditions and out of the bunkers. Meanwhile, the T has extreme heel and toe relief for maximum versatility.

Scheffler has won with both wedges throughout his career. He used the .06K to pick up his first five victories, including his first major at the 2022 Masters, but switched to the T sometime between his wins at the 2023 WM Phoenix Open and 2023 Players Championship.

The T — the SM9 model from 2022 — was the lobber of choice for his historic 2024 season when he won nine times worldwide, including a second Masters, Olympic Gold and the FedEx Cup title.

But in 2025, Scheffler went back to the K at the CJ Cup Bryon Nelson, won that week and then won five more times that season, including his third and fourth major titles at the PGA Championship and Open.

Adding in his victory earlier this year at the American Express, the tournament before he went back to the T again, that gives him 12 PGA Tour victories with the K-Grind and eight with the T. The major split is three to one in favor of the K as well.

Where things get really interesting is that performance with each wedge seems to have nothing to do with the course or conditions. Of the five courses where he’s won twice, three of them (Bay Hill, Augusta National and Muirfield Village) he’s won with both wedges.

Since 2022, his strokes gained numbers are nearly identical with both wedges, gaining .363 strokes with the K-grind across 33 events and .371 strokes over 47 events with the T. In that time, he’s never finished outside the top 25 in SG: Around the Green and is a career-high fourth this season.

So if he’s not doing it for the course or conditions, why change three times over the past four years?

“There’s no real rhyme or reason to it, I think just sometimes I put it in imagining, ‘Oh, when we get to the firmer courses, I’ll use the narrower and the soft ones the wider one,'” Scheffler said. “And I use it in the first tournament and I like it and it’s like, actually, I don’t really want to change because I got to adjust to this new wedge and I’m like, oh, that’s too much.”

              Jack Hirsh/GOLF

That checks out with a lot of Scheffler’s behavior around his golf equipment. While many players form emotional attachment to clubs, Scheffler can take that to another level at times.

For instance, his TaylorMade fitter, Adrian Rietveld, told Golf Digest last year that Scheffler replaces individual irons in his set as they wear out, rather than getting a new set (although Scheffler himself contradicted this back in February).

The point is to say that when he gets comfortable, he gets comfortable and will need a compelling reason to switch. Despite the major differences between his two preferred lob wedges, that doesn’t seem to happen all that often. It should be noted that the T-Grind Scheffler has gone back to is the same SM9 version he played in 2023 and 2024, and Scheffler still plays the three-generation-old SM8 in his gap and sand wedge.

“I always switch and I’d be to [caddie] Teddy [Scott] like, ‘Oh, yeah, I’ll use it on these courses and then switch,'” Scheffler said. “And then I get something that I like and I’m like, ‘Gosh, I like this. I’ll use it wherever.’

“The lob wedge is one of those clubs where you have to learn to play from so many different lies that I get like almost in a relationship with the club where you’re like, I don’t really want to let it go, I know it so well.”

Want to find the best wedges for your game in 2026? Find a club-fitting location near you at True Spec Golf.

To this end, we assembled six GOLF content creators of varying abilities and ran them through the gauntlet of six full-bag fittings (driver to putter!) at six major club manufacturers in Phoenix and Carlsbad, Calif. Our hope: that you might see shades of your own game in one of our panelists’ and take some learnings and inspiration from their fitting experiences. In this installment (below), Jack Hirsh details his low-torque putter journey around Fully Fit 2026. You may browse each of our panelists’ full 2026 dream bags here:

During the course of Fully Fit, I walked away with a few drivers that I really liked. TaylorMade, Callaway, and Cobra all came out swingin’ hard and it was actually difficult to tell the difference between them all on the course.

I ended up picking the Callaway Quantum Triple Diamond because it was constantly faster than the rest of the bunch. Unfortunately, between swing changes, lack of play, and some lack of mental fortitude, everything started to fall apart. I wouldn’t have been able to hit the 18th fairway at St. Andrews’ Old Course, let alone a tight tree-lined fairway here at home, regardless of the driver.

I needed to rebuild.

In this case it means looking at all options again. I even went back to the TaylorMade and Cobra builds that I had also used successfully, including breaking par for my first time with the Qi4D. Nothing worked.

Thankfully, Titleist moved up their driver release this year, and my man Hunter over at TPI got me sorted out.

I walked in with zero confidence in my ability to hit the ball off the tee, and I walked out of that fitting wanting to play more golf. I started to play some really, really good golf, too.

My handicap at the end of last year jumped up to a 1 from +.3 and was trending even worse until the GTS3 got put in the bag. It’s now sitting back at +.3, and I feel like I am playing some of the most confident golf of my life. The GTS3 made me feel completely invincible off the tee. In the moment, and for several weeks afterwards, it was easily the best driver I hit this year.

So naturally, about a week ago, I decided to try out a new driver.

Turns out the greatest gift that Hunter actually gave me was my confidence back. I’ve now gone back to the TaylorMade and the Cobra with much success, and I’m currently in the Qi4D with a new prototype from Mitsubishi that I can’t talk about just yet, but it has an orange band on it.

As a Callaway driver player for the last decade, it’s a weird feeling to not have one in the bag now, but it just proves why getting fit is important, why on-course testing is king and even more not making something work knowing you aren’t at your best. Obviously I will always keep it close but in times like this I need to re-turn over every stone, just my process.

The truth is, there’s no end to this story quite yet. I really thought the GTS3 was it. But the success of the GTS3 sort of created its own rival monster in that it gave me all the confidence back that I needed to play better, and now other things are really good again. This Qi4D combination could be deadly. So rather than answering as to what has made the official bag, I’ll leave you with the plan I have to tackle the decision.

Arccos just released a new update to their app that allows you to compare different clubs’ performance. I am going on a golf trip this week, and I am going to be playing the same course a few times, so we’ve got a perfect storm.

The plan is to bring the GTS3 and the Qi4D builds with me, and alternate them every round for 4 rounds. After that, it’s straight to the Arccos stats, and I’m going to let Arccos tell me what to do. Right now, one of the drivers has a clear lead, but I haven’t hit the same number of shots with both clubs.

By the end of this, I only care about one thing: which one helps me score better. Arccos measures TONS of data, so there will be plenty to dive into.

Here’s what I know for sure. There are multiple great drivers out there for every golfer. This is the best driver market we’ve ever had, and I feel like it’s going to continue to stay that way for a while to come.

We won’t see a new Titleist or TaylorMade til 2028. Ping is set to release a new lineup in 2027, along with Callaway and Cobra, and even Mizuno and Wilson have come out swinging this year with options that I have played on course with plenty of success as well.

It’s the best time to be in the market for a new driver. The only mandatory action you have to take is to make sure that you get fit, and then back that fit up with on-course experience.

In golf, the default assumption is that Titleist only builds equipment for the elite player. When you think of the brand, your mind automatically drifts to the Pro V1 and Pro V1x franchises.

For decades, those models have been the undisputed gold standard on global tours and the default choice for dedicated players seeking maximum green-side control. But that premium reputation creates an unintentional stigma that leaves recreational players wondering if they even belong in the Titleist ecosystem.

During a recent testing session at Lake Merced in San Francisco, I wanted to challenge this. I took the newly redesigned Titleist Tour Soft out to the range to see exactly how a sub-$40, two-piece golf ball stacks up under real-world conditions.

Testing alongside Titleist ball-fitter Tony Rinaldi, I discovered a ball that preserves the core manufacturing DNA of the brand while offering a stable, high-launching option for all skill levels.

The technology under the hood

The Tour Soft occupies a unique space in the lineup. It utilizes a two-piece architecture featuring a large, high-velocity core for maximum ball speed, wrapped in a thin, proprietary Fusablend elastomer cover.

To maximize flight stability, Titleist implemented an optimized 346 quadrilateral dipyramid dimple design.

Historically, a two-piece construction meant a significant trade-off in green-side spin compared to a multi-layer urethane ball.

However, the research and development team completely overhauled this model from core to cover to elevate its performance profile.

This combination is engineered to optimize low long-game spin to maximize distance, while utilizing a specialized dimple pattern to ensure a tight aerodynamic window downrange. But the Tour Soft is designed by the exact same team and manufactured in the exact same in-house ball plants as the premium line.

This ensures that the structural integrity, weight distribution and quality control meet the strict standards of the brand.

Iron testing: Consistency and downrange integrity

I began my testing by hitting partial, off-speed 9-irons to evaluate how the ball behaves when a player isn’t swinging at maximum speed.

This is where many value-tier golf balls struggle, either displaying wild variance in spin or completely dropping out of the sky.

On my first three-quarter 9-iron, the TrackMan recorded 7,500 RPM of spin with a peak height of 92 feet and a steep landing angle of 46.9 degrees. The next swing jumped to 8,000 RPM at 83 feet high with a 44.7-degree landing angle.

Moving to the 7-iron, my stock swing produced a crisp 6,800 RPM of spin, launching into a high apex of 107 feet and landing at 46.5 degrees. *The shot carried 177 yards and totaled 180.)

Modern ball-fitting prioritizes getting iron landing angles close to or steeper than 45 degrees to establish true stopping power on firm greens.

The Tour Soft effortlessly checked that box. The real test came when I hit a flighted, lower-speed 7-iron.

Lower-spinning, distance-oriented balls often lose downrange integrity when flighted down, meaning they dive drastically when they run out of speed.

The Tour Soft held its line beautifully.

Instead of diving, it floated down toward a happy medium. Even with reduced swing speed, the ball maintained 6,000 RPM of spin and landed at a 44-degree angle, giving me a shot I could confidently hit to a back flag.

Driver performance and forgiving spin ceilings

Stepping up to the driver, I immediately noticed the tactile benefits of the Fusablend cover.

The feel is soft, but it gives you a solid sensation off the face, completely lacking the harsh, clicky feel that often plagues low-cost distance balls.

On my first drive, which was a slight mis-hit struck off the heel of the clubface, the TrackMan data remained remarkably safe.

It produced a 13.5-degree launch, an apex of 140 feet and 2,800 RPM of spin, while still carrying 268 yards for a 285-yard total.

Checking performance on mis-hits is essential since no amateur strikes the center of the face every time. The Tour Soft provided a highly protective spin ceiling, meaning bad swings are not penalized with ballooning, unplayable spin rates.

When I caught the next driver shot cleanly with a tight little draw, the numbers dialed into optimal parameters.

The ball launched at 15.0 degrees with a spin rate of 2,600 RPM, reaching an apex of 130 feet, carrying 269 yards and finishing at 288 yards total.

Applying the 3 D’s fitting philosophy

This session at Lake Merced highlighted exactly how the redesigned Tour Soft directly translates to Titleist’s core fitting philosophy, which centers on the 3 D’s: Distance control, Dispersion control and Descent angle.

While the brand originally popularized this diagnostic framework for iron fittings, the golf ball serves as the critical engine driving all three metrics.

When you look at the launch monitor data from this test, the Tour Soft systematically satisfies every single element of that philosophy for everyday golfers. For distance control, it flattens out ball speed gapping and eliminates the erratic fliers common in cheaper multi-layer or low-tier balls, keeping yardages predictable even on off-speed shots.

For dispersion control, the dimple pattern and precise in-house manufacturing keep side-to-side variance tight and shot patterns highly predictable downrange. And for descent angle, the ball delivers the steepness required to hold firm greens without relying entirely on high spin rates.

My stock 7-iron had a 46.5-degree descent angle from a 107-foot peak height, and the partial 9-iron came in even steeper at 46.9 degrees, locking in true stopping power.

The Tour Soft proves that you do not have to play a tour-level urethane ball to get tour-level fitting geometry.

Parting thoughts

The ultimate takeaway from this testing session is that the Tour Soft successfully bridges the gap between high-end tour performance and recreational game improvement.

For high-handicap or slower-swinging players, the ball provides effortless launch, low long-game spin for straighter distance and excellent aerodynamic stability.

For better players who want to protect their wallet without abandoning Titleist quality, the ball demonstrates enough structural integrity to handle flighted iron shots, off-speed control and predictable stopping power.

As a collective whole, any player can go out and play good golf with this ball right now. While it may not offer the extreme, nuanced short-game checking power of a premium urethane ball around the tightest chipping areas, it gives overwhelmingly positive answers across the entire scorecard.

For golfers who want premium engineering and absolute batch-to-batch consistency without paying tour-level prices, the Tour Soft proves it is an exceptional value worth checking out.

Having just won the U.S. Open for the second time in three years, Wyndham Clark was quick to credit the club that helped him to victory.

“I played some ugly golf the last two days, but my putter and short game kept me in it,” Clark told NCB’s Mike Tirico at the trophy ceremony. “To make all the putts that I did with my Ping putter that I love so much has been amazing.”

On the 72nd hole, Clark lagged his 52-foot birdie putt to nine inches to secure his second major title and second victory of the season since making the move to a Ping Scottsdale TEC Ally Blue Onset CB putter. Clark credited the putter multiple times over the past few weeks for the turnaround in his game from 2025.

Just this week, Clark signed a unique putter-endorsement contract with Ping to continue using the putter. It was the first putter-only deal for Ping in more than 50 years of sponsoring Tour players.

“I credit the new putter for helping me get back in the winner’s circle,” Clark said in a release announcing the deal. “The white finish first got my attention and when I started rolling putts with it, it set up easily and gave me immediate confidence. I’d never used a putter with onset before, so it was a new look for me that really matches my eye. The onset combined with the top-rail dot simplifies alignment and my consistency has improved. I’m sinking more long putts than ever.”

Clark started the year as a gear free agent after his previous contract with Titleist expired at the end of 2025. He cycled through putters for the first two months of the season, then switched to the Scottsdale TEC in March at the Texas Children’s Houston Open before moving to a heavier counterbalanced version at the RBC Heritage in April.

Since the move to the 38-inch counterbalanced model, Clark has skyrocketed in the PGA Tour’s SG: Putting category, going from losing .725 strokes a round and ranked 155th on Tour to T62 and.120 strokes gained on the field. Much of the improvement has come from 5 to 15 feet, where Clark’s make percentage has gone from 160th on Tour to 55th.

This week, Clark was T4 in Strokes Gained: Putting, picking up more than 6 shots on the field.

While he’s now tied down with his putter, Clark remains a free agent for the rest of his bag other than his ball. He continues to rep Titleist for the Pro V1x. Aside from the putter, the other club he has experimented with this season is his driver.

The 2023 U.S. Open champion began the year by using four different drivers in his first five events before settling on the TaylorMade Qi4D. He won in Dallas in his first week playing Project X’s new Titan Yellow wood shaft and made more changes over the past two weeks to the setup, dropping from a 10.5 lofted head because of high spin.

“It’s actually a high loft 9° head and we were just looking to get his spin rates down to like 2500-2400,” TaylorMade Tour rep Adrian Rietveld said. “So we handpicked the 9° head because we couldn’t do it with the 10.5˚.

“Same settings, same weight setup and everything, we just needed to find a loft setup. We had a fraction less loft.”

Clark finished 14th for the week at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in SG: Off-the-Tee.

The victory means that all five of the men’s and women’s majors this season have been won with TaylorMade drivers. Clark joins Rory McIlroy and Nelly Korda in winning four of the five of them with the Qi4D driver. He is the only major winner using the Qi4D without a contract.

The rest of his bag includes a Ping G440 Max 3-wood — making him the first player in the last seven majors to win without using the TaylorMade Qi10 — the same Titleist T-Series irons he played while under contract with Titleist last season and Vokey SM11 wedges.

Designed and engineered in our R&D Lab in San Diego, CA, Titan Black is built to meet the demands of today’s faster, more aggressive swingers. A more elastic handle section progressively firms through the mid and tip, delivering a smooth feel with added stability where it matters most. Synex Technology utilizes multi-axial carbon fibers to reinforce the shaft’s outer structure, increasing hoop stiffness from the handle through the mid-section for efficient energy transfer and enhanced control. By blending feel and stability, Titan Black gives players the confidence to swing faster without sacrificing dispersion or consistency.

At first glance, it looks like another Tour player testing another putter. I don’t think it’s that simple.

What’s interesting isn’t that Ludvig changed putters. Tour players do that all the time. It’s that he changed his type of putters.

For years, Aberg was one of the rare elite players who resisted the industry’s migration toward larger, more forgiving mallets. While Tour vans filled up with Spider putters, Jailbirds and every high-MOI shape imaginable, Ludvig stayed committed to a traditional blade.

That tells you something about what he likes to see.

Players at that level don’t accidentally stick with a putter for years. They trust it. They understand exactly how it reacts. They know what a good stroke feels like with it — and a bad one. Use Scottie Scheffler as another example a couple of years back, going from his Scotty Newport 2 into a Spider Tour X. It was a life-changer.

So when a player with that kind of loyalty makes a significant change, I pay attention.

The Phantom 3.2 is an interesting choice because it sits somewhere between a traditional blade and a modern mallet. It offers more stability and forgiveness than a blade, but it doesn’t completely abandon the look and flow that many blade players prefer. At the U.S. Open this week, Tour rep Brad Cloke explained that the Phantom 3.2 fit Ludvig’s eye. That might sound insignificant to the average golfer, but it’s usually the entire story.

One thing I’ve learned from spending time around Tour reps and Tour players is that putter changes are rarely about technology. They’re almost always about comfort.

Nobody suddenly discovers a magic putter when they’re one of the best players in the world. The technology gains at that level are marginal. What players are searching for is confidence. Better visuals. Better alignment. Less stress standing over a six-footer that matters.

That’s where this move gets interesting.

Earlier this season, putting wasn’t exactly a strength for Aberg. Entering the Players Championship, he ranked 91st on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Putting at just +0.014 strokes per round. Fast forward a few months and that number has improved to roughly +0.227 strokes gained per round, moving him comfortably into the top half of the Tour.

Now, I’m not suggesting the putter deserves all the credit. Golf isn’t that clean. Better speed control, improved confidence, course fit and simple variance all play a role. But when a player changes putters and the results trend in the right direction, it’s at least worth paying attention. And honestly, the move makes a lot of sense.

Nobody is looking at Ludvig’s golf swing and suggesting he needs a rebuild. Nobody is questioning the ball striking. If you’re searching for incremental gains at his level, putting is usually the most logical place to look. The best players in the world aren’t chasing wholesale changes. They’re chasing fractions.

A slightly better start line.

A little more forgiveness.

A touch more confidence.

Over a season, those tiny improvements become meaningful. Millions-of-dollars meaningful. What I find most fascinating is that this feels less like a player abandoning his identity and more like a player evolving it. For years, the equipment conversation in professional golf was framed as blades versus mallets, traditional versus modern. That’s not really how Tour players think anymore.

They want whatever helps them perform. If that means a mini driver, they’ll use a mini driver. If that means a 7-wood, they’ll use a 7-wood. And if that means moving from a blade into a shape that offers a little more stability while still looking familiar, they’ll do that too.

The obvious question now is whether the switch sticks.

Tour players are ruthless. If something isn’t helping, it doesn’t get a six-month grace period. It disappears. That’s why the next few months will be more telling than the first few weeks. But regardless of what happens, I think there’s already a lesson here for the average golfer.

Too many players become loyal to categories instead of results. They’re “blade guys” or “mallet guys.” They’re attached to what they think they should play instead of what actually helps them score. One of the best young players in the world just showed a willingness to challenge his own assumptions.

That’s usually where improvement starts.

And if a player as loyal to his putter as Ludvig Aberg is willing to make that leap, maybe the rest of us should be a little more open-minded too.

A few months ago I got the chance to head back to Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside, Calif., and get fit for the new GTS series with my now permanent (please, Titleist) fitter: Hunter Brown. The GT lineup never found its way in my bag, other than the GT1 3Tour, so I was anxious to try the new GTS lineup and see what it could possibly do to get a driver in my bag from Titleist.

There are a couple of very key changes that were made to the lineup that were big positives for me. The biggest one I knew before walking in the door was the addition of dual weighting on every model, which is a massive upgrade for a player like me who performs better with back weight. My fitter Hunter and I had already exchanged some messages about the fitting and he had shared some major excitement for me particularly. I went in skeptical, but I left a big believer. Here’s why.

During the fit we took the opportunity to run through the entire lineup. We started off with the GTS3 as sort of a teaser for what would come in the fitting, and on the first swing my initial reaction was “sold”. It just felt so much better to me, and we hadn’t done anything other than match the build that I was in with GT3. We did hit the GT3 “gamer” before we went into the new heads, and it showed its flaws for my swing, as well as some demons that I had been battling at the start of 2026 regardless of which product was in my hands. Even a few swings later with the GTS3, where I had the same high-toe ducky miss, there wasn’t much to complain about. The ball was still in the fairway. At this point, I was locked into the fitting and Hunter had me.

Before we hit the GTS2, Hunter also made a really cool statement that stuck with me through the rest of the fitting just from an equipment geek standpoint. He mentioned that if you keep loft the same, there’s 22 different CG positions that you can fit the lineup into. This was a very unique way of saying that there was a driver in the lineup for everyone. By mentioning that you’d keep loft the same and have that many different positions, he was referencing the idea that all three new heads now had dual weighting front and back. The GTS3 and the GTS4 also have heel to toe weighting in the front track.

Over the past few years, we’ve started to hear OEMs talk about driver lineups in different ways. Most of them are talking more and more about how the drivers fit different kinds of players and how these lineups can be fit to get dialed in for every swing, but I hadn’t specifically heard a fitter talk to me so much about CG location before. But it makes sense. CG location helps to determine performance from the strike. Matching up the right CG with not only where a player strikes it on the face but also how that face comes through impact is huge.

With 22 different total positions within the 3 different drivers, Titleist now has more power to fit players than they ever have before, and once they combine that with loft offerings and adapter settings, and there are over 350 total combinations of Titleist drivers, and that doesn’t include shaft selection. That’s exactly why this fitting ended up changing my season.

GTS2 and GTS4 were also really great in their own ways. The biggest differences that I felt during the fitting were that the GTS2 was definitely the easiest to turn over, and the GTS4 felt so much better than the previous generation GT4 thanks to its return to a 460cc shape that matches the rest of the lineup.

The GTS4 is a really interesting driver, and something I would love to experiment with a little bit more, but the spin profile made it hard for me to consider as a gamer. What’s fascinating though is it’s not a fade machine. It does work really well for players who like to move the ball left to right, but I wouldn’t say that it’s fade biased by any means. It’s been mentioned to me by some Titleist staff that it’s working really well on Tour for players who like the ball to start left and cut, but it’s also working quite well for guys who like to see sort of a straight line draw that gets up in the air easily but tumbles as it lands and rolls out. They also did something really cool and essentially used the body silhouette of the TSi3 which is arguably the most loved shape for Titleist staffers on Tour, and they turned it into the GTS4 with all the great technology they added to the modern lineup. The GTS4 also sounds the best out of the group for me. It’s a very satisfying muted crack at impact that grows in volume as you add more speed to it.

The GTS2 was very impressive. I think it does a good job of backing itself away from the GTS3, and it’s also got a much different sound profile compared to the GTS3, as does the GTS4. This was something they did on purpose. The GTS4 is a little bit more of a muted crack at impact while the GTS2 is a big loud, more confidence inspiring with just a touch of pitch. They all sound great, and how you’d expect a Titleist to sound, but they definitely have distinct sounds and feel profiles that apply to the different types of players that each head is aimed at.

With the GTS2, it just felt a bit too loud and firm for me. Performance wise in terms of speed, spin and launch it was actually really close to the GTS3, which is cool to see, and maybe it was just my first swing love with the GTS3, but there was just something about it that made me want to go back and see how dialed we could truly get with it.

Once we were settled on the GTS3 as our starting point, Hunter moved the heavier weight to the back of the head, and he also added a bit of additional weight. The final configuration ended up being 4 grams in the front middle position and 13 grams in the back of the head. We moved the adapter setting from D4 to the standard A1 setting and it was bombs away. The only other change we made was to move to a 10.0º head, which was really more of a comfort thing for me than anything else. Having a little bit of extra loft just makes me feel more comfortable on the tee, and gives me the big towering draw shape that I am after. Living outside of Chicago, everywhere we play is soft, so optimizing for roll isn’t appropriate; it’s all about carry.

I’ve now played about 12 rounds with my GTS setup, and it still remains unchanged and very successful on the golf course. Hunter always does a terrific job, and I am looking forward to the next time I get to go back and mess around at TPI with him. This GTS3 is easily the best driver I have ever played myself, and it’s completely changed my outlook on Titleist woods. I always felt left out of the hype when it came to Titleist and not for lack of trying. The GTS family brought me into the mix finally, and getting to experience the benefits of Titleist woods has been really fun. It’s also created a new confidence in my game that has helped me score better across the bag as well.

Cauley was one of the earliest converts to the GTS2, making the move in his first start after its Tour launch at the Valero Texas Open. That week in Texas, he told reps he loved the stability and spin consistency he got compared to his old gamer, as well as the sound and feel. He noted a touch more launch as well in an 8.0-degree head with an 11g weight forward and a 5g weight in the rear.

Since his move, Cauley has jumped 44 spots in the PGA Tour’s SG: Off-The-Tee ranking, going from losing 0.138 strokes per round (109th on Tour) to picking up just under a tenth of a stroke (0.09, 65th).

Last week at the RBC Canadian Open, he gained more than two-and-a-half shots on the field (17th) as he won for the first time on the PGA Tour in 239 starts.

After 239 PGA Tour starts, Bud Cauley finally has his first PGA Tour win.

Cauley plays a full bag of Titleist in what is a fairly stock setup as things go, playing the brand’s GTS metalwoods, U505 utility irons, a combo irons set, SM11 wedges and a Scotty Cameron putter.

But the win with the GTS driver is significant, making it back-to-back wins for the new driver family, which has quickly become the hottest driver on the PGA Tour. Cauley’s victory comes with the GTS2 model, marking the deeper CG option’s first PGA Tour victory.

Cauley was an early convert to GTS, switching in his first start after the March launch at the Valero Texas Open. He told reps that week he loved the stability and spin consistency he got compared to his old gamer, as well as the sound and feel. He noted a touch more launch as well.

His Scotty Cameron GoLo 7 S1 jumps on a trend started by Rickie Fowler and Gary Woodland, who both switched to the center-shafted mallet originally released in 2010s earlier this season. Cauley made his move at the Truist Championship from a blade and found the center-shaft configuration very easy to set up to and was a bit heavier than his gamer.

This week, Cauley was fifth in the field in SG: Putting with 6.681 for the week.

Two years ago, Titleist launched its GT series of drivers, and the lineup was received extremely well. This year’s GTS drivers take it to another level.

GT exploded on the PGA Tour, it won a bunch of tournaments, and the general sentiment was that Titleist was back to being serious about having a lineup of drivers aimed at the true player. No compromises, no frills, just a great lineup of drivers that, if nothing else, were very, very fast. It seemed like everybody was jumping into the GT family.

That is, except for me.

I never really got along with GT. I had a great fitting at TPI with Hunter, but with no options to bring the weight back in the head on the GT3, and not finding the right feel for the GT2, I was left on an island. It would be obvious to say that the addition of the rear weight in the new GTS3 is what finally sold me back to a Titleist driver, but after testing I actually found out that there’s another hidden feature that could be playing an even bigger role.

Behind the face of the GTS lineup of drivers is a welded ring that Titleist calls their Speed Sync face. This is an evolution of the Speed Ring that was part of the magic behind the success of the GT lineup of drivers.

What they’ve done with Speed Sync, though, is actually opened up the top of the ring to create more of a horseshoe shape. This opening at the top allows the top of the face to continue to flex and promote faster ball speeds in what’s typically one of the slower parts of the face. It also gives the drivers a great deal of spin consistency, which you’ll see reflected in some of the reactions that Titleist Senior Director of Metalwood R&D Stephanie Luttrell and I had in the above video.

I tend to live higher on the face with my strike, and it’s something I’ve become accustomed to building my drivers around. Now, when I say “high,” we’re talking a couple of millimeters, but the issue is that as an already low-spin player, going high in the face can sometimes cause a drastic reduction in spin. More so than what you would see with the average player.

I’m already on the edge and going up high in the face, on the wrong driver, can be devastating. And that was the case with the Titleist GT. The GT series had such a forward CG and a lower MOI measurement compared to others that anything that made those attributes stand out more, like hitting high on the face or out towards the toe, was going to hurt my performance potential.

With Speed Sync on the Titleist GTS, that entire issue was thrown out the window. It did still drop spin a touch, but it was actually just a touch. We’re talking maybe 150 rpms of spin, instead of the 200-300 that I was dropping with GT, and the GTS still launched more appropriately with more speed. Having that new horseshoe shape and an open high face created a better environment for my strike and my normal miss.
